1. Brown County Inn

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Vegan Options, Kid-Friendly, Large Groups
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music, On-Site Parking, Open Late
Exterior of the Brown County Inn Restaurant featuring an orange-red barn-style siding, a wooden sign labeled “Restaurant,” and bright landscaping under a blue sky.

If you’re only going to pick one restaurant to visit in Brown County, this is the one I recommend most often. The Brown County Inn serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, with a big menu that works for just about everyone, including families and larger groups.

My go-to order is an order of cheese curds for the table, plus the steak and fries with chipotle aioli and a side salad with ranch (basically my perfect combo), but their daily specials are worth checking out too.

The vibe is relaxed, there’s live music Wednesday through Saturday evenings, and the outdoor space includes a mini-golf course and pirate ship play area—making it a kid-friendly favorite without sacrificing good food. They also have plenty of parking and can easily handle larger parties.

2. Bird’s Nest Cafe

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Vegan Options
  • Features: Outdoor Seating
Charming garden pathway leading to the Bird’s Nest Café, surrounded by blooming flowers, rustic fencing, and cozy cottage-style architecture.

This is one of my personal go-tos for brunch or lunch, any time of year. And while I’m not personally vegan or vegetarian, this is a great option for those who are.

The menu is thoughtful, the portions are generous, and the setting is peaceful (a cozy downtown cottage surrounded by one of my favorite gardens around, and they have the best seasonal decor).

Expect an eclectic vibe and slower-paced service, but that’s part of the charm here. My personal favorites are the turkey avocado sandwich with rosemary fries or whatever seasonal pancake special is on the menu. They’ve also been offering dinner Fridays through Monday now as well, which I love.

Just a heads up: the menu might not be the best fit for picky eaters or younger kids, but if you’re into creative food and a slower, unplugged pace, Bird’s Nest is definitely one of the best places to eat in Nashville, Indiana.

3. The Chocolate Moose

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Ice Cream, Quick Bites, Sweets & Treats, Kid-Friendly
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, On-Site Parking, Open Late
Exterior of The Chocolate Moose ice cream and dessert shop, with rustic beige siding, branded signage, and potted plants flanking the front entrance.

This is our family’s go-to spot for ice cream, coffee, and quick meals—whether it’s a casual lunch, a post-hike cone, or something sweet before heading home. They’ve got a drive-thru (though it’s not fast food—expect a short wait), and they’re open later than any other ice cream place in town.

Beyond the ice cream and coffee drinks, they serve breakfast sandwiches, muffins, egg bites, and a big selection of wraps, sandwiches, and potato wedges for lunch. Their coffee menu is legit—lattes, cappuccinos, and even pour-over. It’s definitely some of my favorite coffee in town, even though my former favorite spicy chai latte is no longer on the menu.

It’s a casual, family-friendly spot where you can relax or recharge in between exploring downtown Nashville. And yes, the ice cream is always a must when you’re on vacation.

| WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | LOCATION – 278 S VAN BUREN ST |

NOTE: Unfortunately, the Chocolate Moose isn’t necessarily the cheapest option, so if you’re traveling on a tighter budget, here are a few other solid spots locals love:

  • ☕ Coffee: Brown County Sugar Shack – Low-key, great drinks, and some of the best prices in town.
  • 🍳 Breakfast Sandwiches: Nashville BP – Between the donuts, Broaster Chicken, and surprisingly good carry-out, locals know it’s more than just a gas station.
  • 🍦 Ice Cream: Honestly? Still stick with The Chocolate Moose. There are other good ice cream shops in town, but prices are similar, none stay open as late, and truthfully, their ice cream is just that good.

4. Brozinni Pizzeria

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Pizza, Kid-Friendly, Large Groups, Quick Bites (until 4p)
  • Features: Outdoor Seating
Outdoor view of Brozinni Pizzeria in Nashville, Indiana, with a large oval sign and shaded patio seating.

Brozinni’s is our go-to for reliable, casual dining—especially when we’ve got hungry kids or a big group. The New York-style pizza slices are massive, the portions are generous, and the vibe is laid-back and friendly.

And I do mean friendly—my family has a running exchange of jokes and riddles with one of the servers. That kind of warm, personal service is a big reason this place stands out, especially in a town full of visitors.

They serve pizza by the slice until 4pm, plus pastas, garlic knuckles (don’t skip these), and salads. It’s a quick lunch stop, an easy dinner option, and a favorite with locals for a reason.

Bonus: Brozinni’s is one of the only restaurants in town with a backup generator—so if the power goes out (rare, but it happens), this is one of the few places that stays open. Smart move, and another reason to love them.

5. Olde Bartley House Coffee & Donuts

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Sweets & Treats, Kid-Friendly, Quick Bites
  • Features: Outdoor Seating
Close-up of a white box filled with six gourmet donuts topped with frosting, sprinkles, crumbles, and glaze, held outside Olde Bartley House Coffee & Donuts.

Olde Bartley House is one of the newest (and best) additions to Nashville’s breakfast scene. It’s known for its signature Volànts—a croissant-style layered pastry that’s crisp, flaky, and filled with rotating flavors like Pistachio Dream or Peanut Butter Pie.

But here’s the thing most people miss:
👉 Their breakfast sandwiches are just as good—maybe even better. They’re served on a plain Volànt and layered with eggs, cheese, and your choice of protein. Flaky, buttery, and totally satisfying.

The space is cozy and historic with updated charm, and it’s a great spot to meet a friend for coffee, pick up a light lunch, or grab something sweet for later. They also serve sandwiches on Volànt buns, seasonal drinks, and espresso-based coffee.

They opened in June 2024, so if it’s been a while since your last trip to town, don’t skip this one!

6. Story Inn Restaurant

  • Best for: Dinner, Special Occasions
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music, On-Site Parking, Reservations Required
Rustic, ivy-clad exterior of the historic Story Inn, with weathered metal siding, vibrant flower boxes, and a sign reading “Story Inn 1851” above the porch.

If you’re planning a romantic dinner or special occasion, there are a few places in Brown County that stand out—and one longtime favorite is the Story Inn Restaurant.

Located in a historic village about 20 minutes from Nashville, it offers a prix fixe menu built around seasonal, locally sourced ingredients in a charming 19th-century setting.

It’s quiet, candlelit, and full of character—absolutely worth the drive if you’re looking for a meal that feels like an experience. They also serve Sunday brunch, and often have live music on weekends in the tavern or patio.

👉 Want something more casual but still full of character? Head downstairs to the Story Inn Still Tavern, where you’ll find comfort food, cocktails, and live music on weekends in a cozier, less formal setting.

Cooper’s Alley – UPDATE

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Special Occasions
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Reservations Required

Until recently, I would have paired Story Inn with Cooper’s Alley as my top two picks for a romantic meal in Brown County. But Cooper’s has become a bit of a question mark lately—they’ve been open on and off and, as of this writing, may be closing permanently.

If you’re hoping to go, I strongly recommend calling ahead to confirm they’re open, and even then, be prepared for possible last-minute changes.

| WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | LOCATION – 110 N VAN BUREN ST |

If you’re looking for an in-town option that’s more reliable than Cooper’s Alley, here are two date-night spots I recommend instead:

  • Ferguson House Bistro & Bar – More casual than Cooper’s Alley, but cozy and consistently good. The historic house setting is charming, the patio is dog-friendly, and the menu changes often.
  • The Nashville Chop House – Steakhouse vibe with solid entrees and a full bar. It’s not straight out of Pinterest like Cooper’s Alley, but it’s open later than most places and reliably good for a night out.

7. Ferguson House Bistro & Bar

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Special Occasions
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music
Beautiful pale green historic-style building with white trim and a wraparound porch housing the Ferguson House Bistro in Nashville, Indiana.

The Ferguson House hits that sweet spot between laid-back and special, and it’s one of the restaurants I recommend most often for a casual date night, especially if you want a nice atmosphere without going full-on fine dining.

Set in a charming, remodeled old boarding house, the space has original wood floors, antique windows, and local art by Patricia Rhoden Bartels on the walls. The dog-friendly patio out front is a great place to sit when the weather’s nice, and if you time it right, you can hear live music from the adjacent beer garden while you eat.

The menu changes often, and the food is consistently great—some of the best you’ll find in town. I love that it works just as well for a relaxed lunch as it does for an easy but memorable dinner.

8. Hard Truth Hills Restaurant

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Large Groups
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music, On-Site Parking
Rustic lodge-style entrance to Hard Truth Hills in Nashville, Indiana, with a timber-framed covered patio and landscaped stone path leading to the restaurant.

Hard Truth Hills is more than just a restaurant—it’s a 325-acre destination. If you’ve got the time to spend and want a one-of-a-kind setting, this place is worth a visit.

The restaurant shares space with the Hard Truth Distilling Co., and you can build a whole afternoon on the grounds around food, cocktails, tastings, and even off-road ATV tours.

They have a large indoor dining room, as well as tiered outdoor terraces where you can catch live music on weekends from May to October. The restaurant can get busy on weekends, and the service can be a little slow, but the setting more than makes up for it.

In addition to Hard Truth Distilling Co spirits, they also serve beer from their sister company Quaff On! Brewing Co, which is also brewed in Nashville, IN. My personal favorites are the Hoosier Red Ale and Blood Orange Yellow Dwarf; plus, their cocktails are always fantastic.

🚗 NOTE: Hard Truth Hills is not walkable from town due to the lack of sidewalks and a steep entrance hill, so plan accordingly for your transportation.

9. Rafters Food & Spirits

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Kid-Friendly, Large Groups
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, On-Site Parking, Live Music
Modern outdoor patio at Rafters Food & Spirits, with sleek black tables and colorful umbrellas lining the deck under a wood-accented gable roof.

Tucked inside The Seasons Lodge, Rafters is a bit off the main downtown path—but absolutely worth the detour. It’s one of those places that flies a little under the radar, but once people find it, it becomes a repeat favorite.

The space was recently remodeled and feels warm, welcoming, and just upscale enough. The menu leans elevated pub food—burgers, fried chicken, sandwiches—but the flavors are big and the portions are generous. If you go, do not skip the Pulled Pork Loaded Tots or Portobello Fries.

It’s also the perfect pre-show dinner spot if you’re heading to the Brown County Music Center—just a short drive away and far easier to get in and out of than most in-town options (just be sure to make reservations on show nights).

10. Out of the Ordinary Restaurant & Hickory Sports Bar

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Kid-Friendly, Large Groups
  • Features: On-Site Parking
Sidewalk view of Out of the Ordinary Restaurant with warm-toned storefront, hanging signs, and leafy tree cover along the bustling Nashville, Indiana strip.

There’s something about Out of the Ordinary that just feels… right. Maybe it’s the wood-paneled walls, maybe it’s the regulars, maybe it’s the fact that the service is always excellent—but this place feels like the kind of spot you’ve been going to for years, even if it’s your first visit.

The menu leans heavily into Indiana-style comfort food and bar favorites. My go-to is the crispy chicken salad with ranch (but don’t skip adding a hard-boiled egg and bacon), and they might have the best fried pork tenderloin sandwich in town. My kids are big fans of the fettuccine alfredo with chicken.

It doesn’t have a patio, and it’s not trendy—but that’s part of its charm. But it’s definitely dependable, welcoming, and very Brown County.

11. The Nashville Chop House

  • Best for: Dinner, Special Occasions
  • Features: Open Late, On-Site Parking
Cozy interior of the Nashville Chop House featuring wood floors, classic bar seating, a chalkboard menu, and warm lighting with a hint of purple neon ambiance.

The Nashville Chop House is one of the few places in Brown County where you can actually sit down for a meal after 9pm—which already makes it stand out. But beyond that, it’s just a solid, reliable choice for a steakhouse-style dinner, especially if you’re looking for something a little more traditional.

It’s located in the Hotel Nashville complex and has that classic “old-school steakhouse” vibe—dark wood, full bar, and no-frills but well-executed food. The tomahawk pork chop is a standout, and they also serve oysters, loaded baked potatoes, and hearty salads.

If you’re looking for a romantic dinner but Cooper’s Alley is closed, this is a great backup: not quite as styled or curated, but still a solid date night option with strong cocktails and generous portions. Plus, it’s usually open until midnight on weekends, which is rare in this town.

12. Sugar Creek Barbeque Co

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Kid-Friendly, Quick Bites
  • Features: On-Site Parking
Close-up of a barbecue plate from Sugar Creek BBQ featuring a glistening rack of ribs, cornbread, baked beans, and a serving of creamy coleslaw in paper trays.

Sugar Creek BBQ is a local favorite for a reason—no-fuss, flavor-forward smoked meats and classic sides, served in a comfortable, casual setting. It’s not flashy, but it delivers exactly what you want from a barbecue spot: ribs, pulled pork, brisket, turkey, and a handful of Hoosier-style sides like mac and cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread.

It’s one of those places where everyone leaves full, and you’ll be tempted to grab a to-go box for later. They also offer catering, which I’ve used for several events—it’s always been smooth, affordable, and well-received.

If you’re craving BBQ and want something straightforward, fast, and satisfying, Sugar Creek won’t let you down.

13. Hoosier Thai

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Vegan Options
Alt text: Exterior of Hoosier Thai restaurant in Nashville, Indiana, featuring a red hanging sign, weathered brick and stone walls, and a small chalkboard menu near the door.

Hoosier Thai might not be what you expect to find in a small Southern Indiana town but, trust me, this spot is legit. It recently opened in the old Our Sandwich Place location (and yes—they kept the IU-themed décor), but the food is a major upgrade.

The menu features all the Thai staples, including curries, stir-fries, noodles, and appetizers, and most dishes can be made vegan or vegetarian upon request. It’s fast, flavorful, and fresh—everything you’d want in a great Thai lunch or laid-back dinner.

For years, Thai food was something I only got on trips to Bloomington. But now? I may never need to leave Brown County for my yellow curry fix again.

It’s still flying under the radar for most visitors, but locals are catching on fast, and I think it’s only going to get busier.

| WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | LOCATION – 15 S VAN BUREN ST |

P.S. Not in the mood for Thai, but craving more than the usual sandwiches and pizza? Try one of these instead:

  • Johnny’s Grub to Go – Filipino-American comfort food from a walk-up trailer.
  • Not Just Gyros II – Fast and flavorful Mediterranean-style wraps and plates.
  • Casa del Sol – Sit-down Mexican restaurant with a big menu and great service.

14. Pure Nashville Classics

These spots are what you might call “quintessential Brown County.” They’re not necessarily my personal top picks for everyday dining, but they’ve been around a long time, are well-loved by locals and visitors, and showed up repeatedly when I asked folks about their favorite dishes in town.

Nashville General Store & Bakery

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Kid-Friendly, Quick Bites, Sweets & Treats
  • Features: Outdoor Seating
Colorful exterior of Nashville General Store and Bakery with vintage signage, yellow painted siding, and a mossy roof, exuding nostalgic small-town charm.

Part bakery, part shop, part restaurant—this is a good casual lunch stop if you’re wandering downtown and want something quick and filling. You can also browse for local jams, sauces, and souvenirs while you wait.

🌟 If you ask locals about their favorite dishes here, the consistent favorites are the: Chicken Salad Sandwich, Biscuits & Gravy, and Tuna Salad Sandwich.

Brownie’s Bean Blossom Family Restaurant

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Kid-Friendly
  • Features: On-Site Parking
Cozy, diner-style interior of Brownie’s in Bean Blossom with wood accents, booth and table seating, and customers enjoying breakfast under warm lighting.

If you’re headed north of Nashville toward Bean Blossom, this no-frills diner-style restaurant is a favorite among locals—and the kind of place where you’ll be welcomed like family. The menu covers all the Midwestern comfort food bases, including homemade pies, and portions are generous.

It’s especially popular with locals who live nearby, and while it’s a bit off the typical tourist trail, it’s a 100% the real Brown County experience.

🌟 If you ask locals about their favorite dishes here, the consistent favorites are the: Fried Walleye (especially on Fridays), Fried Sugar Cream Pie, or just “anything on their menu”.

19th Hole Sports Bar at the Salt Creek Golf Retreat

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Large Groups
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music, On-Site Parking, Open Late
Spacious interior of 19th Hole Sports Bar in Nashville, Indiana, with high-top tables, a long bar, sports on multiple TVs, and a casual, modern vibe.

More of a locals’ hangout than a tourist stop, but if you’re looking for a place with live music on weekends, solid bar food, and big portions—it checks all the boxes. Plus they host a weekly Euchre tournament!

🌟 If you ask locals about their favorite dishes here, the consistent favorites are the: Hoosier Fries, Bacon Chicken Ranch Wrap, and the Salmon Bacon Ranch Wrap.

| WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | LOCATION – 2359 SR 46 E |

The Nashville House Restaurant

  • Best for: Lunch, Dinner, Kid-Friendly
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, Live Music
Outdoor dining patio at The Nashville House with closed red umbrellas, metal tables and chairs, and a vintage country store sign visible in the background.

Reopened in recent years with a more streamlined menu, The Nashville House is still best known for its fried biscuits with apple butter, which are basically a rite of passage for first time visitors. Expect classic Hoosier-style entrées like fried chicken, fish, and hearty salads.

🌟 If you ask locals about their favorite dishes here, the consistent favorites are the: Fried Biscuits & Apple Butter, Fried Chicken, and Salmon Salad with Cucumber Dill Dressing.

15. Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls & Cafe

  • Best for: Breakfast, Lunch, Sweets & Treats, Kid-Friendly
  • Features: Outdoor Seating, On-Site Parking
Exterior of Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls & Café, featuring whimsical architecture, bold signage, and a patio with bright red and black umbrellas.

The name tells you everything you need to know—this place is all about the cinnamon rolls. They’re giant, soft, and topped with layers of gooey frosting, and yes, they’re the main event here.

That said, there’s more to the menu than just sweet treats. They also offer breakfast dishes like biscuits and gravy, cheesy eggs, artisan breads, and daily lunch specials.

Ownership changed hands in 2023, but the new team kept many of the crowd favorites. If you’re visiting on a weekend, get there early—they sometimes sell out, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

I personally find the cinnamon rolls to be too sweet for me, but there’s no denying they’re beloved by locals and visitors alike. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, it’s worth stopping in.
