Get Outside and Enjoy the Fall Colors

Fall in Brown County is all about those stunning colors—and there’s no better way to experience them than by getting outside! Whether you’re hiking through the woods, taking a scenic drive, or just sitting at an overlook with a hot drink in hand, Brown County is the perfect place to soak in all the beauty of the season. Here are a few of my favorite ways to enjoy the fall colors:

Best Trails for Hiking and Biking

One of the best ways to experience Brown County’s stunning fall colors is by hitting the trails. Whether you prefer a peaceful hike through the woods or an adventurous ride on your mountain bike, the area offers something for every outdoor enthusiast.

Hiking

I love hiking in Brown County year-round, but the fall is especially breath-taking. Here are some of my favorite trails for this time of year:

Biking

For mountain bikers, Brown County offers some of the best singletrack riding in the Midwest and is recognized as a Bronze-level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bike Association.

Here are some great trail options and biking events to keep in mind:

  • Brown County EPIC Mountain Bike Festival is one of the highlights of the fall season, taking place in early October. Riders come from all over to experience some of the best trails in the region, along with live music, food, and a fun festival atmosphere. Even if you’re not participating, it’s a great event to check out!
  • For quieter rides, try the Crooked Creek Loop at Yellowwood State Forest, a peaceful yet challenging trail that takes you through the heart of the forest. Another excellent option are the Hoosier National Forest & Nebo Ridge Trails, which offer a mix of scenic gravel roads and rugged terrain for experienced riders.
  • If you’re into road biking, the rolling hills and backroads of Brown County provide beautiful routes, especially as the fall leaves start to turn. Or, for a family-friendly paved trail near Nashville, be sure to check out the Salt Creek Trail for a more relaxed ride.

Explore the Backroads

While the overlooks are breathtaking, the real magic of fall happens up close. That’s why a scenic drive through Brown County’s winding backroads is a must. You’ll get a whole new perspective on the fall colors as the lower branches and understory light up in shades of red, orange, and gold.

You could spend a weekend checking out the artists and studios featured on this year’s Brown County Back Roads Studio Tour, take one of the scenic drive routes shared by the Brown County Visitor’s Center, or get a dose of history using the self-guided tour developed by the Peaceful Valley Heritage group.

Take in the Views

For a classic fall moment, head to one of Brown County’s scenic overlooks. Grab a blanket, pack a few snacks, and watch the sun set over the vibrant landscape—it’s an experience you won’t forget.

The most popular spots include Hesitation Point in Brown County State Park and Bean Blossom Overlook. If you’re up for something a little more off the beaten path, try Lake Yellowwood, where the trees reflect perfectly on the water, making the colors even more striking.

Shop and Stroll in Nashville

The shops in town go all out with amazing fall décor, so I say that you could easily count shopping in Nashville towards your daily dose of the outdoors.
