If you’ve ever heard of Brown County, Indiana, chances are that you know it’s famous for its beautiful fall foliage and breathtaking views. While that reputation is well-deserved, it also means things can get a little crazy as people flock here to see the fall colors.
I’ve lived here since 2016 and, in that time, I’ve identified some tips and tricks that can help make your fall visit to Brown County more enjoyable and will (hopefully) help you dodge the worst of the crowds and traffic.

1) Visit on a Weekday, If You Can
It’s no secret that Brown County gets busiest on the weekends, especially in the fall. While it’s always a little busier during this season, October weekends are definitely the peak. If the weather is perfect and the fall colors have reached their brightest, you could be dealing with some serious crowds—think long lines at attractions like Brown County State Park and a packed Town of Nashville.
Weekdays, on the other hand, are much calmer. It’s still busier than other seasons, but much less chaotic than the weekends. If you have flexibility in your schedule, I’d recommend planning your visit Monday through Thursday.
Pro Tip: While most places stay open 7 days a week during the fall, you might run into a few closures, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. If there’s something specific you want to see or do, be sure to check their hours in advance!

2) Use Backroads and Alternative Routes
Nashville, Indiana is a small town with only a handful of main roads. On busy weekends, especially in October, I’ve seen traffic back up for 45 minutes or more on State Road 46 toward Columbus or Bloomington.
If you’re familiar with the area, or even if you’re just feeling adventurous, consider using backroads like State Road 135 North, Helmsburg Road, or other scenic routes to get around. Not only will you avoid traffic headaches, but you’ll also see some stunning areas of the county that most visitors miss.
Pro Tip: Some areas still have limited or no cell service, especially on certain carriers like AT&T. On busy fall weekends, service might also slow down due to network overload. If you’re heading out to explore the backroads, download your map directions in advance, save offline maps, or even take a few screenshots just in case.

3) Check Out Less Well-Known (but Still Beautiful) Spots
Everyone knows that Brown County State Park has some amazing views, and that Nashville is full of charming shops and restaurants. But these two locations are not the only spots to see colorful foliage, explore the outdoors, or experience the charm of Brown County in the fall. Â
To explore the outdoors without the crowds, consider the Yellowwood State Forest, the Hoosier National Forest, or one of the many nature preserves and trails throughout the county (like Stone Head Nature Preserve, Hitz-Rodehamel Woods, Laura Hare Nature Preserve, or the Tecumseh Trail).

Or you could plan an outdoor adventure with Xplore Brown County, Simply Fitness Yoga & Paddleboarding, Brown County Bikes, Pathfinder Outfitters, or IndiGo Birding Tours.
And if you’d rather take a scenic drive, grab the map from the Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour or the self-guided driving tour from the Peaceful Valley Heritage Group. You can even pack a picnic and stop along the way to soak in those fall colors at your own pace. While you’re out and about, don’t forget to swing by the TC Steele State Historic Site for a mix of history, art, and natural beauty—it’s a hidden gem worth visiting!
I share more specific ideas for where to go and things to do in Brown County in September and October in separate posts.
4) Pick your lodging location based on your desired activities
If you’re planning an overnight stay (and especially if it will be over a weekend), then try to choose your lodging location based on your desired activities so that you don’t have to fight traffic to get where you want to go.
Are you just trying to escape into nature, soak up some time in the woods, and enjoy time with the group you’re traveling with? Then pick a cabin or vacation rental that’s more secluded (bonus points if it has a hot tub), and avoid the traffic that’s in and around Nashville and the State Park.

If you’re planning to explore Nashville for shopping or dining, book a Nashville, Indiana hotel or downtown vacation rental that’s within easy walking distance of town. That way, you won’t have to deal with finding parking or sitting in traffic. Lodging like the Brown County Barn Burner, Lucy’s Loft, the House at 12 South, or Printer’s Lane Place are all perfect for being right in the action—plus, you’ll still see plenty of fall foliage during your stay.
Heads up: If you haven’t booked your fall lodging yet, do it ASAP! Fall in Brown County, Indiana is a popular time for visitors, and places fill up quickly.
5) Stay Flexible If You Want to Catch Peak Fall Colors
The exact timing of peak fall colors varies from year to year. Generally, fall foliage in Brown County starts changing in mid-September and lasts through mid-November, but it’s hard to predict the perfect time.
And once the leaves hit their peak, there’s no way to know how long it will last. It could be a couple of weeks or just a few days, depending on the weather. A big storm could knock those beautiful leaves off the trees before you know it.
If seeing the most vibrant fall colors is your top priority, I recommend keeping your schedule flexible for a day trip. Check out the Brown County Leaf Cam on the Visitor’s Center website for real-time updates, and be ready to head out when things look just right.
Of course, if your schedule isn’t flexible, don’t stress! Brown County is gorgeous at any time during the fall season. There are plenty of fall decorations and activities happening from early September to mid-November to help you get into the spirit—so relax and enjoy your time here, no matter when you visit!
