Table of Contents
ToggleAugust is the quieter end of summer in Brown County. Schools here go back early in the month – including Brown County and most of the districts around us – so once that happens, the weekday crowds thin out, and things get calm again midweek. The weekends and the festivals are still going strong, so if you come during the week, you get plenty to do without the peak-summer crowds.
It’s still hot. But the humidity usually backs off a little compared to July, and that makes a difference. It’s also a good stretch for the simple summer stuff – a long drive on the back roads, or one more afternoon out on the water while it’s still warm.
You can search for specific dates or events here, use the table of contents or links below to jump straight to the week you’re interested in, or keep scrolling to check out everything going on in Brown County this month.

August Event Highlights — Don’t Miss These
- Summer Rum Festival at Hard Truth Hills — Hard Truth trades the bourbon for rum for a day of tropical cocktails, tastings, and summer festivities up on the hill. (August 1)
- Brown County Humane Society Barn Sale — One of my favorite events of the whole year. Three days of treasure-hunting through thousands of donated items out at the Away-A-Day RV Campground, everything from antiques to outdoor gear, with every dollar going to the Brown County Humane Society. (August 13-15)
- ChamberFest Brown County — A week of world-class chamber music in intimate local settings like St. Agnes Church and the Playhouse, with international prize-winning musicians and free admission (reserved seats available for a little extra). (August 16-22)
- Pickin’ in the Backwoods Music Festival — A three-day, BYOB music-and-camping festival out at eXplore Brown County, with 35+ bands, food trucks, and late-night jams for an intentionally small, intimate crowd. (August 20-22)
- Vintage Baseball at the Story Inn — One of the more delightfully odd things you can do around here: watch three five-inning games played by 1864, 1869, and 1886 rules on the grounds of Story, the oldest bed and breakfast in Indiana. Free to watch. (August 22)
- Southern Indiana Blues Festival — Three days of live blues, open jams, and workshops with regional and national acts at Bill Monroe’s Music Park, with camping optional. (August 27-29)
- Nashville Indiana Farmers Market — Still every Sunday from 11a-2p in the Brown County Inn lot, now with late-summer produce, flowers, and handmade goods. (Every Sunday in August)
- Soak Up the Last of Summer on the Water — August is still good paddling season, with warm water on Lake Monroe, Lake Lemon, and Yellowwood for kayaking, paddleboarding, or just floating around. The Brown County State Park pool stays open through Labor Day, too, though it drops to weekends-only hours once school’s back in session. (Throughout August)
**NOTE** I do my best to keep this list accurate–and I’ve linked everything I can to help you find the details you need–but it’s always a good idea to double-check event pages or Facebook listings in case plans change.
And if you notice anything I’ve missed, feel free to let me know so I can add it!

Wrap-Up: August Events in Nashville, IN & Brown County
August is a good time to catch Brown County at a slower pace. There’s still a lot going on – festivals most weekends and one of the busiest lineups of the year at the Music Center – but once school’s back in, the weekdays quiet down.
That’s worth planning around. If you want a calmer trip, come on a weekday in the second half of the month, after school starts, and you’ll have the trails, the shops, and the back roads mostly to yourself. If you’re coming for a festival weekend, book your lodging ahead like usual. Either way, plan for the heat.
For the most up-to-date info on anything happening locally, the best places to check are specific event or business Facebook pages, or community groups like All Things Brown County. And if you’ve got time in the evening, get out on the water while it’s still warm, hit the farmers market on Sunday, or take a back-road drive once it cools off.
Need more late-summer ideas? Don’t miss my full post on more things to do in Brown County during August (coming soon)!
