October is the biggest month of the year in Brown County, without a doubt. This is the month everyone has in mind when they say they want to come see the fall colors, and the calendar is packed from the first weekend straight through Halloween.

If you’re coming specifically for peak color, plan for later than you’d think. I track the leaves here every year (there’s a full photo timeline in my peak fall color post), and true peak almost always lands in the last week of October or the first few days of November. Come early in the month and you’ll probably catch the start of the turn, not the full color. Still beautiful, just not peak.

The other thing to plan for in October is people. Fall weekends are the busiest we get – downtown, the state park, and the roads in and out all fill up. If you can come during the week, do it. You’ll get the same views with a fraction of the crowd. If a weekend is what you’ve got, that works too, just book your lodging early and don’t be in a rush once you’re here.

October Event Highlights — Don’t Miss These

  • Brown County Back Roads Studio Tour — A free, self-guided driving tour of artists’ home studios out on the county’s back roads, where you can meet the makers and watch them work. It runs on select dates through October, so check the tour map for the current schedule. (Throughout October)
  • FallFare at Nashville United Methodist Church — The church’s annual fall fair, a hometown favorite with food, crafts, and community. (October 3)
  • Brown County Responder Aid Concert at Bill Monroe’s Music Park — A benefit concert at the birthplace of bluegrass supporting local first responders. (October 3)
  • Fall-O-Ween Party at Deer Run Park — A free, family-friendly Halloween party from the Brown County Parks & Recreation department, with games, candy, and costumes. (October 9)
  • DINO Tecumseh Trail Challenge — An ultramarathon along the rugged Tecumseh Trail, one of the toughest long-distance runs in the state, drawing trail runners from all over. (October 17)
  • Fall Festival at Brown County State Park — A day of fall activities at the park’s Nature Center and campground, right in the middle of leaf season. (October 17)
  • Halloween in Brown County — Brown County goes big for Halloween, and there’s something for every age. A lot of these firm up their dates closer to the season, so double-check before you go:
    • Trick-or-treating on Halloween night happens in a few spots: Squash the Block turns the downtown Nashville shops into a trick-or-treat route, Trick or Treat on the Trail lines the Salt Creek Trail with candy stations, and the Cordry-Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department runs its own out at the lake. (October 31)
    • Friendly Forest Halloween Trail – a not-too-scary walk-through trail for younger kids, put on by the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department. (Dates TBA)
    • Cordry-Sweetwater Haunted Forest & Hayride – the spookier version, with a haunted woods walk and a hayride from the Cordry-Sweetwater VFD. (Dates TBA)
    • Melchior Marionettes “slightly haunted” puppet show – a longtime Halloween-season tradition at the Brown County Playhouse. (Dates TBA)
    • Blue Lady Bash – the Story Inn’s Halloween party, named for the inn’s resident ghost. (Date TBA)
    • Sweet Mash Monster Bash – the grown-ups’ party at Hard Truth Hills, with themed cocktails and Hard Truth spirits (21+). (October 31)
  • Nashville Indiana Farmers Market — Every Sunday from 11a-2p in the Brown County Inn lot, with the last market of the 2026 season on October 25. (Every Sunday in October)

Wrap-Up: October Events in Nashville, IN & Brown County

There’s a reason October is the month Brown County is famous for. There’s a ton going on, it’s a beautiful time to be here, and it’s your best shot at that classic fall color. Plenty of other months have just as much magic, if you ask me, but if the classic Brown County fall trip is what you’re after, this is the month to get it.

Just plan for the busy season, because that’s what it is. Book lodging as early as you can, expect slow going on Van Buren Street and SR 46 on weekends, and give yourself extra time to park downtown. If peak color is the whole reason you’re coming, aim for the last week of the month or the first few days of November. And if crowds aren’t your thing, come on a weekday.

For the most up-to-date info on anything happening locally, the best places to check are specific event or business Facebook pages, or community groups like All Things Brown County. And while you’re here, take the long way on the back roads, catch the color from an overlook, and don’t try to cram it all into one day.
