September is the start of fall in Brown County, at least on the calendar. People start putting out corn stalks and mums, and the event schedule somehow gets even busier than it was all summer. But if you’re picturing full fall color and cool, crisp days, you’re still a few weeks early.

For most of the month, it still feels like summer here. The days are usually warm, the overnights start to cool off, and the humidity keeps easing up, which makes for some of the best outdoor weather of the year. The leaves won’t really turn until late October, so September gives you a packed calendar – arguably even more going on than October – without the full color-season crowds.

You can search for specific dates or events here, use the table of contents or links below to jump straight to the week you’re interested in, or keep scrolling to check out everything going on in Brown County this month.

September Event Highlights — Don’t Miss These

  • Good People Good Times Music Festival — A laid-back, multi-day outdoor music festival out at eXplore Brown County, with live bands and camping. (September 11-12)
  • Art Colony Weekend — Three days of gallery openings, artist demonstrations, and an art auction from the Brown County Art Guild, celebrating the Midwest art-colony painters who put Nashville on the map. (September 11-13)
  • War in the Woods — No-prep drag racing at the Brown County Dragway, where nobody knows what the track is going to do, which is exactly the point. (September 18-19)
  • Brown County Rock & Mineral Show — Gems, fossils, and hands-on demos like gold-panning and flint-knapping at the Fairgrounds, with kids’ activities and free admission and parking. (September 19-20)
  • Nature Daze — The Brown County Native Woodlands Project’s annual day of speakers, a kids’ program, a native plant sale, and a free lunch, all about caring for the woods that make this place what it is. (Date TBD)
  • Uncle Pen Fest — Bluegrass at the source, with performers, workshops, open jams, and the Bluegrass Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at Bill Monroe’s Music Park. (September 24-26)
  • Indiana Bigfoot Conference — Two days of speakers, vendors, and fireside chats digging into Bigfoot evidence and Indiana sightings, over at Seasons Lodge. (September 25-26)
  • EPIC Mountain Bike Festival — A few days of group rides, demos, clinics, and after-parties celebrating the world-class trails at Brown County State Park. (September 25-27)
  • Hard Truth Hills Harvest Festival — Hard Truth’s annual harvest celebration up on the hill. Details are still coming, but the date is set. (September 26)
  • Nashville Indiana Farmers Market — Still every Sunday from 11a-2p in the Brown County Inn lot, now with late-summer produce, flowers, and handmade goods. (Every Sunday in September)
  • Ease Into Fall — The weather and the trees may not have gotten the memo yet, but fall is all over the calendar this month. Town starts getting decorated for the season, and the events lean right into it. It’s an easy way to kick off fall in Brown County before October’s color and crowds show up. (Throughout September)

**NOTE** I do my best to keep this list accurate–and I’ve linked everything I can to help you find the details you need–but it’s always a good idea to double-check event pages or Facebook listings in case plans change.

Wrap-Up: September Events in Nashville, IN & Brown County

For me, September is the best of both seasons. The weather starts to crisp up, but it’s still plenty warm for summer stuff like paddleboarding and long days outside, and the calendar is already leaning into fall. That mix is exactly what makes it such a good time to come.

The back half of the month is when it really fills up. As you get closer to October, several of the biggest events of the season stack up – Uncle Pen Fest, the EPIC Mountain Bike Festival, and the Indiana Bigfoot Conference all land on that same late-September weekend – so if you’re thinking about booking lodging, the sooner the better.

For the most up-to-date info on anything happening locally, the best places to check are specific event or business Facebook pages, or community groups like All Things Brown County. And while you’re here, hit the farmers market on Sunday, take a drive on the back roads, or grab a patio seat while the weather’s still warm.
