Planning activities for a large group or retreat in Brown County, Indiana is different than planning a weekend for two.
And because the Brown County Barn Burner was designed specifically for hosting groups, I spend a lot of time answering one main question from our guests: “What should we actually do while we’re here?”
They’re not asking about just a list of attractions. They want to know what actually works well for a group of ten, fifteen, twenty, or even more people with different personalities, different energy levels, and different expectations.
In addition to hosting guests year-round, I also host the REIGNITE Retreat multiple times a year, where I personally book local experiences, coordinate vendors, and test what flows well for a group dynamic. We also travel frequently as a family, and I’m constantly filtering activities through a simple lens: would this work smoothly for a group?
If you’re looking for a full directory of everything to do in Nashville or across Brown County, I’ve written those guides separately—this isn’t it. This post is focused specifically on group-friendly activities, and the experiences I know from firsthand experience work well for retreats, reunions, leadership offsites, and multi-family gatherings.
Because planning for a group isn’t about finding things to do, it’s about choosing the right kind of experience for the energy in the room.
How to Choose the Right Group Activity in Brown County
When you’re planning for 10–15+ people, the biggest mistake I see is choosing activities based on what sounds fun instead of how it will actually function for your group.
I host multiple retreats each year at the Barn Burner and regularly help guests plan group itineraries in Brown County, so I’ve seen firsthand what flows easily, and what quickly falls apart.
Some experiences are great individually but chaotic for large groups. Some work beautifully if booked correctly. Others are ideal only if you understand realistic pacing and logistics for the area.
That’s why I’ve organized this guide to focus specifically on group activities in Brown County that actually work well for 8-15+ people, not just general things to do.
Instead of organizing everything by generic tourism categories, I’ve grouped activities by how they actually function for groups—energy level, structure, and overall vibe.
If you already know the kind of experience you’re looking for, start with the quick reference below and jump straight to that section.

Creative & Hands-On Experiences
If you’re trying to help a group connect quickly—especially if not everyone knows each other yet—creative experiences are one of the easiest ways to do it.
I host an annual women’s art and creativity retreat at the Barn Burner, and I’ve done many of these workshops myself. I’ve watched how people loosen up when their hands are busy, and the pressure to “make conversation” disappears.
These are structured enough to feel intentional, but relaxed enough that no one feels put on the spot. They give people something to focus on, something to laugh about, and something to take home, without requiring athletic ability or big personalities.
Most of these activities work well for retreats, girlfriend weekends, birthday trips, and leadership groups looking for structured but low-pressure bonding time.
Create at Our Little World Studio
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate or Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Creative & Reflective Activities, Good for Mixed Interests, Kid-Friendly Entertainment
Our Little World Studio is one of the most flexible creative spaces in town, especially if you’re working with mixed ages.
I’ve recommended this spot multiple times for multi-generational family groups because it allows everyone to participate at their own pace without anyone feeling left out.
Kids gravitate toward the Slime Bar immediately, while adults often settle into pottery painting or one of the DIY craft options. There’s even a wine-and-craft setup that makes it feel a little more elevated for adult groups.
Group Planning Tip: Our Little World’s make-and-take space is walk-in-friendly, which is helpful when your group doesn’t want to commit to a strict schedule, but for large groups I’d suggest reserving spots in advance. They also host private events, if that’s a better fit for your group.
Build a DIY Terrarium at Mossy Rock Pottery
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Creative & Reflective Activities, Good for Mixed Interests
The DIY terrarium bar at Mossy Rock Pottery will become an instant favorite for your next group getaway or retreat.
The owner provides support and guidance, but overall it’s self-guided, which means no one’s left waiting or stuck following a script. Some people go all in on designing the perfect arrangement. Others chat and browse while they decide.
I love this option for mid-afternoon retreat blocks because it gives you connection without intensity.
Group Planning Tip: The DIY Terrarium Bar is walk-in-friendly, but the space isn’t huge. For large groups, I’d suggest reserving spots in advance or scheduling a private event.
Pour Custom Candles at Lakehouse Candle Company
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Creative & Reflective Activities
I hosted a retreat at the Barn Burner where we booked a candle-pouring session with Lakehouse Candle Co as one of the activities, and it ended up as one of everyone’s favorite activities of the week.
Blending scents is more personal than people expect. Everyone starts comparing combinations. Someone always gets overly confident about their “signature blend.” And then, weeks later, when they light that candle at home, it brings the weekend back.
That’s why this activity works so well for retreats and celebration trips—it extends the memory.
Group Planning Tip: Lakehouse Candle Co hosts occasional candle-pouring events of their own, but for a large group or specific dates, it’s best to reach out about scheduling a private event.
Design a Custom Hat at Queen Hat Co
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Something Celebration-Worthy
Queen Hat Co is one of the most fun “main character moment” experiences in town.
You’ll work one-on-one with owner Dale Ann to design your hat, choosing bands and details while everyone else in your group weighs in with opinions. It naturally turns into a shared event, even if only one person is actively designing at a time.
This is especially popular with bachelorette groups and milestone birthdays because it feels unique and elevated without being cheesy.
Group Planning Tip: Queen Hat Co has limited walk-in hours available each week. If you’re planning something with a group, it’s best to reserve your time slots in advance or schedule a private event.
Take an Artist-Led Workshop at Second Story Studio
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate or Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building, Creative & Reflective Activities
If your group prefers something more structured than drop-in crafting, Second Story Studio offers guided workshops in painting, mixed media, and so much more.
These sessions have a clear beginning and end time, which makes them helpful for corporate or wellness retreats that want a scheduled creative block. Everyone works individually, but the shared experience creates a natural connection.
I’ve watched complete strangers sit quietly painting for an hour and then, somehow, leave feeling like they’ve known each other for years. There’s something about shared creativity that lowers defenses without anyone realizing it.
For retreat leaders, this can also double as a metaphor moment for personal growth—creativity, perspective, interpretation—without forcing it.
Group Planning Tip: Second Story Studio hosts occasional art workshops on the weekend, but for groups and retreats wanting a specific date or more personalized experience, it’s best to reach out about scheduling a private event.
Get Permanent Jewelry at Rustic Charm
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Something Celebration-Worthy
Getting permanent jewelry ar Rustic Charm is quick, but it can become one of the most meaningful parts of a trip.
I’ve seen girlfriend groups get matching chains. I’ve seen family members choose subtle pieces to mark a reunion. There’s also the option to add a clasp option if the idea of “permanent jewelry” feels too intimidating.
It’s a simple activity, but symbolic and long-lasting, which makes it surprisingly powerful.
Group Planning Tip: Rustic Charm typically allows for drop ins, but it’s a small space that can get especially busy on the weekends. Groups should reserve their time slots in advance or schedule a dedicated private event.
Book a Private Flower Arranging Workshop at the Barn Burner
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate or Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers,Creative & Reflective Activities, Something Celebration-Worthy
I host these floral arranging workshops myself, and they are one of my favorite ways to help a group settle in together.
We use seasonal blooms and vintage vases, and I guide the process step-by-step — but without rigid rules. Someone always says, “I’m not creative,” and then creates something beautiful.
Because this can be hosted right at the Barn Burner (or brought to your rental), it eliminates transportation logistics and keeps your group fully together.
Group Planning Tip: I have limited availability for these workshops, so make sure you reach out early to schedule if you’re interested!
Relaxed & Low-Key Group Experiences
Not every meaningful group moment needs to be high-energy or hands-on.
Sometimes the best connection happens when you give people space to breathe, move slowly, or simply share an experience without pressure.
These options are especially helpful for retreats that need built-in downtime, multi-generational groups balancing different energy levels, or weekends where you want intentional connection without over-scheduling.
Book Group Yoga with Simply Fitness
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate or Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor & Outdoor Available, Year-Round Option, Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Team-Building, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
I’ve worked with Simply Fitness for multiple retreats, and part of what I appreciate most is how relaxing and adaptable the experiences she provides are.
Sessions can be customized to your group’s ability level and intention. I’ve seen it used as a gentle morning reset, a grounding session before deeper retreat work, and even as a way to transition from “arrival energy” into something calmer and more focused.
Outdoor sessions in warm weather are especially beautiful in Brown County. There’s something about moving together with the hills around you that shifts the entire tone of a weekend.
That said, this works best when your group is open to slowing down. If your crew is high-energy and craving adrenaline, start elsewhere and circle back to this as a grounding block.
Group Planning Tip: Book early for weekend retreats, and be clear about your group’s experience level so the session can be tailored appropriately.
Schedule Massages or Spa Services with Local Wellness Providers
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Creative & Reflective Activities, Something Celebration-Worthy
For retreats that balance activity with restoration, scheduling massage or spa sessions for the group can elevate the entire experience.
Nashville Wellness houses several practitioners, which makes it easier to coordinate multiple appointments at once. I’ve seen retreat groups stagger sessions so some guests receive treatments while others explore downtown or relax back at their lodging.
It’s not something everyone has to participate in at the same time, and that flexibility is part of what makes it work so well for mixed groups.
The biggest mistake I see here is trying to schedule everyone back-to-back in a single afternoon. For larger groups, it’s smoother to stagger appointments across a full day or pair this with a self-guided downtown block.
Group Planning Tip: Start coordinating well in advance for larger groups, especially during fall. Individual appointments can fill quickly.
Explore Local History & Art Through Guided Tours
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests
Brown County makes it easy for your group to add a layer of culture or history to the trip, without turning it into a formal museum day.
One of the most meaningful stops is the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, where you can tour the home and studio of one of Indiana’s most celebrated artists. I always tell people that if you want to understand why Brown County became known as the “Artist Colony of the Midwest,” this is where the story really begins. The experience blends art, history, and nature in an immersive yet unhurried way.
The first time I toured T.C. Steele’s property with a group, what surprised me wasn’t the art, it was how quiet everyone became walking through the gardens. It shifted the tone of the afternoon in a way no structured activity could have.
For something more tailored, you can arrange private group tours through the Brown County History Center or Pioneer Village. These tours often open up additional buildings and offer deeper storytelling, which works especially well for school groups, retreats, or multigenerational gatherings.
This kind of activity adds substance to a weekend without draining energy.
Group Planning Tip: Public tours are available at set times, but larger groups should call ahead to discuss private or customized options, especially during peak seasons.
Ride the Nashville Express Trolley for a Guided Town Overview
- Best For: Families, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, Advance Bookings Possible for Very Large Groups
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
The Nashville Express Trolley is one of those simple activities that solves multiple problems at once.
It gives new visitors an overview of town. It provides seating for guests who may not want to walk far. And it creates a shared and educational experience without requiring physical effort.
I especially like recommending this early in a group trip. It helps everyone get oriented and feel more comfortable navigating the area afterward. Just keep in mind that during peak fall weekends, you may need to split into two rides or plan around wait times. It’s simple, but not always instant.
Group Planning Tip: Check the trolley schedule in advance, especially during slower seasons when hours may be limited.
Take a Group Photo at Yesteryear Old Time Photos
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
Yesteryear Old Time Photo may look cheesy on paper, but in practice, it works every time.
Dressing up in vintage costumes and committing to an old-time photo removes everyone’s cool factor immediately, so it’s a great way to loosen up the group and get everyone laughing.
It’s quick, it’s silly, and it becomes an instant shared memory. I’ve done this with my family before, and the photo ended up on my mom’s Christmas card that year.
Group Planning Tip: This is generally drop-in friendly, but during peak weekends there may be a short wait.
Active & Outdoor Experiences for Mixed-Energy Groups
One of the biggest advantages of hosting a group in Brown County is how easy it is to get outside without turning it into a logistical production.
You don’t need matching T-shirts. You don’t need a whistle. You don’t need a rigid schedule.
What you do need is space, and this area delivers that in a way that works beautifully for mixed ages, mixed fitness levels, and mixed interests. These are the kinds of activities where your group can start together, spread out naturally, and reconnect without anyone feeling left behind.
That said, “easy to get outside” doesn’t always mean “easy to manage.” Parking, fall traffic, weather swings, and mixed mobility levels can shift the dynamic quickly. The key is choosing outdoor experiences that allow flexibility without forcing everyone into the same pace.
Plan a Flexible Day at Brown County State Park
- Best For: Families, Corporate and Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity, Active & Outdoorsy
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests
If you’re hosting a group in Brown County and skip the State Park entirely, you’re missing a core piece of what makes this area special.
However, for many groups, the State Park works best when it’s treated as a choose-your-own-adventure day rather than a single scheduled activity:
- Rent a shelterhouse as a shared home base (the Lower Shelter is especially good for groups and families)
- Hike together (check out my hiking guides to find trails for a self-guided hike that suits your group) or join a naturalist-led hike for a guided experience
- Visit the Nature Center to explore exhibits and learn more about the animals, environment, and natural history of Brown County
- Take on the 7 Vista Challenge or visit scenic auto tour stops for low-effort, high-reward views
- Pick a spot to sit at a picnic table and just take in the hills and some soothing time in nature (bonus points if you’ve got kids in your group and you pick a picnic table by a playground)
This approach works especially well for mixed-age or multi-interest groups who want shared time and autonomy.
I’ve hosted retreat afternoons here where half the group chose a moderate hike while the other half stayed near a shelterhouse journaling and talking. Everyone felt included, and no one felt pushed. That flexibility is what makes this park so powerful for group planning
Group Planning Tip: Fall weekends are extremely busy. If you’re planning your group event during the fall and want to visit Brown County State Park, make sure to arrive early, carpool when possible, and plan for extra drive time inside the park.
Spend a Slower Day at Yellowwood State Forest
(Include shelterhouse rental mention)
- Best For: Families, Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests
When the State Park feels crowded, Yellowwood State Forest is where locals go.
It’s quieter. Less structured. More peaceful.
Groups can rent the shelterhouse near the lake, fish from shore, hike the Lake Trail, or simply sit near the water and talk. I especially love recommending Yellowwood for retreats that include journaling, reflection, or deeper conversation blocks.
This is not the place for high-energy groups looking for constant stimulation. It shines when your group values quiet, space, and slower pacing.
Yellowwood feels beautifully immersive and a world away, without being too remote.
Group Planning Tip: Amenities are more limited here than at the State Park. Plan ahead for restroom access, food, and any other supplies your group may need.
Gather and Play at Deer Run Park
- Best For: Families
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option, Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
If you want one location where everyone can do something different without leaving the same space, Deer Run Park is hard to beat.
There’s a large playground, skate park, pump track, disc golf, open fields, and walking paths—all connected.
I often suggest this for family reunions because you can rent the shelterhouse as a home base, then let kids run, teens ride, and adults relax or walk, all within eyesight. It’s simple. And that simplicity is what makes it work.
The only caution here is that this is a public park. On certain weekends, especially during youth soccer and baseball seasons, the park can fill up with families there for games, which might make it difficult for your group to find parking or fully make use of all the amenities.
Group Planning Tip: Reserve the shelterhouse in advance for larger gatherings, especially in summer and fall. Besides the shelterhouse, everything else is just open to the public and available for use.
Try Paddleboarding with Simply Fitness
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate and Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building
Paddleboarding sounds more intimidating than it actually is, but the sessions offered by Simply Fitness are calm, supportive, and beginner-friendly. Most groups end up laughing more than anything else.
What makes this work so well for retreats is that it allows people to move at their own pace. Some stand confidently. Some stay kneeling. Everyone shares the water and the experience.
I’ve paddleboarded with groups ranging from my own kids to 60+ year old REIGNITE Retreat attendees and they’ve all loved it. Even though there is a level of physical fitness and mobility required to participate, everyone I’ve seen try paddleboarding has left with a smile.
Group Planning Tip: Plan around weather and book early during peak summer weekends.
Cool Off at the Abe Martin Lodge Indoor Waterpark & Pool
- Best For: Families
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment
If you’re planning a multi-generational trip, especially in winter or early spring, the indoor waterpark at the Abe Martin Lodge is an easy win.
The indoor waterpark at Abe Martin Lodge gives kids something exciting while adults can relax nearby. Because it’s inside the State Park, you can pair it with a scenic drive or short hike earlier in the day.
It’s not a massive resort-style waterpark, and that’s part of why it works. It’s manageable and low-pressure, but still plenty of fun.
Group Planning Tip: Check day-pass availability in advance if you’re not staying at the lodge.
Go Gem Mining at Copperhead Creek Gem Mine
- Best For: Families
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
At Copperhead Creek Gem Mine guests can take turns mining for gems and fossils while others relax nearby, making it easy to accommodate different energy levels and attention spans. It’s especially popular with kids, but adults tend to get just as into it once the buckets start coming through.
Everyone keeps what they find, which makes it a simple, hands-on experience that doubles as a built-in souvenir, with no scheduling or instruction required.
Group Planning Tip: This works best layered into a downtown afternoon rather than as a standalone destination.
Book a Guided Outdoor Experience with Local Outfitters
- Best For: Corporate and Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building
If your group wants time outside but doesn’t want to self-navigate trails or plan logistics, guided outdoor experiences are a strong middle ground. For connection without intensity, these are ideal.
Pathfinder Outfitters offers guided canoe and kayak trips that are calm, scenic, and well-suited for groups. They can also help with gear rentals and route planning, which removes a lot of friction for retreat leaders. The water experiences here aren’t about speed — they’re about shared rhythm and conversation.
IndiGo Birding Nature Tours provides peaceful, engaging birdwatching walks that are especially beautiful during migration seasons. This is a slower-paced, observation-focused experience that works incredibly well for reflective retreats or groups who value learning and quiet attention.
Both options allow your group to share space and experience without requiring athletic intensity. The focus is on conversation, observation, and moving through the landscape together.
These are especially effective for leadership or wellness retreats because conversation flows naturally side-by-side. If you’re trying to spark deeper dialogue, activities like this works better than a conference table.
Group Planning Tip: Communicate your group size and experience level clearly when booking. These experiences can often be tailored, but advance coordination is important, especially during peak seasons.
Adventure & Adrenaline-Focused Group Activities
Some groups don’t want slow and reflective. Instead they want challenge, adrenaline, and a shared “we did that” moment.
Brown County has more of that than you might expect.
These activities work best when they’re intentionally scheduled and clearly opt-in. Not everyone in your group will want this level of intensity, and that’s okay. But for the ones who do, these experiences can become the defining memory of the trip.
I’ve learned this the hard way: if you don’t frame high-energy activities clearly as optional, they can unintentionally create pressure. The right people will be thrilled. The wrong people will quietly dread it. Clear communication keeps this category empowering instead of polarizing.
Go Ziplining at eXplore Brown County
- Best For: Families, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy, Adrenaline-Focused
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building, Kid-Friendly Entertainment
Ziplining at eXplore Brown County is one of the most well-known adventure experiences in the area.
It’s guided, safety-focused, and surprisingly accessible for first-timers. I’ve seen groups come off the course completely energized, especially leadership groups who benefit from stepping slightly outside their comfort zones together. The person who leads in meetings isn’t always the first one off the platform and that shift creates interesting momentum for the rest of the retreat.
They also offer team-building elements and challenge-style programming, which makes this more than just a recreational activity if you’re planning a corporate or leadership retreat.
Group Planning Tip: This is not a casual add-on. Plan it intentionally, confirm participant comfort levels ahead of time, and book well in advance during peak seasons.
Take an ATV Tour at Hard Truth Hills
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy, Adrenaline-Focused
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
Hard Truth Hills isn’t just tastings and patio views. Their ATV tours are totally one-of-a-kind and take groups through wooded terrain on guided off-road routes.
This is a high-energy, muddy, laugh-a-lot kind of activity.
It’s also loud and fast-moving. If your group includes guests who prefer calm conversation or structured reflection, this may not be the shared activity, but it can be a great breakout option for the thrill-seekers.
It works especially well when paired with a distillery tour or meal afterward. I’ve seen groups build an entire afternoon around Hard Truth—start with adrenaline, end with cocktails.
Group Planning Tip: Closed-toe shoes and advance reservations are essential. Confirm age and any other participant requirements before booking.
E-Bike & Mountain Bike Rentals and Lessons from Brown County Bikes
- Best For: Families, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy, Adrenaline-Focused
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building, Kid-Friendly Entertainment
Brown County Bikes offers electric bike rentals that make riding the hills accessible to almost everyone, even those who wouldn’t normally consider cycling. Groups can cruise through downtown, explore scenic backroads, or split into casual and more adventurous riders without leaving anyone behind.
They also rent mountain bikes and offer lessons if your group wants to try something more technical together, or have access to the State Park mountain bike trail system.
This works especially well for leadership retreats, active family groups, or teams looking for a way to connect without overexerting themselves. Just know that Brown County hills are real. Even with e-bikes, route planning matters. I always recommend clarifying whether your group wants scenic cruising or trail-system riding before booking.
Group Planning Tip: Reserve well in advance, especially for larger groups, and clarify skill levels if you’re planning to use mountain bike trails.
Play Disc Golf at BC3 or Deer Run Park
- Best For: Families, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building, Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
Disc golf is a fun group activity in Brown County, and there are two excellent options depending on your vibe.
BC3 is a championship-level course that draws serious players, but it’s also accessible thanks to multiple tee options and on-site disc rentals. It’s great for groups with experienced players who want a challenge.
Deer Run Park, on the other hand, offers a more relaxed, public course that’s easy to layer into a casual park day. It’s ideal for beginners, families, or groups who want to try disc golf without making it the main event.
Both options allow your group to play together or split into smaller teams without a rigid schedule.
Group Planning Tip: BC3 is pay-to-play. Deer Run is public. Plan accordingly based on group expectations.
Golf at Salt Creek Golf Retreat
- Best For: Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy
- Structure: Best with Advance Booking
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests
Salt Creek Golf Retreat is the only golf course in Brown County, and it’s a solid one. The course winds through rolling hills and wooded terrain, giving golfers a true Brown County feel without being overly intimidating.
For group trips, golf works best as an optional breakout activity—a morning or afternoon where some guests play a round while others relax, hike, or explore town. It’s especially popular for retreats or reunions where not everyone wants to do the same thing, but everyone wants a good experience.
Group Planning Tip: Coordinate tee times early for larger groups, especially during fall foliage season.
Take on a Guided Group Horseback Ride at the State Park Saddle Barn or Grandpa Jeff’s Trail Rides
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity, Active & Outdoorsy
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
Horseback riding was actually my first introduction to Brown County as a kid, so I always have a soft spot for this one.
Both the Saddle Barn at Brown County State Park and Grandpa Jeff’s Trail Rides offer beginner-friendly guided rides through the hills.
It’s adventurous enough to feel special, but structured and accessible for first-timers. For groups where not everyone knows each other yet, this works beautifully because conversation flows naturally side-by-side instead of face-to-face. It removes social pressure without removing connection. For a laid-back, memorable experience, guided trail rides through the hills are hard to beat.
Group Planning Tip: Weight limits and age restrictions apply. Confirm details when booking.
Try Goat Yoga at The Goat Conspiracy Sanctuary
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests
Want something a little quirkier? The Goat Conspiracy is a local sanctuary where your group can sign up for goat yoga, enjoy a guided farm tour, or simply spend time connecting with the animals.
It’s lighthearted, low-stress, and unexpectedly delightful, making it perfect for families or groups looking to break the ice or add something memorable and unique to their itinerary.
Group Planning Tip: This is an outdoor experience and some amount of goat poop will be encountered. Plan for weather and wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
Book a Ropes Course or Team-Building Challenge
- Best For: Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Active & Outdoorsy
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Team-Building
If your retreat has a true leadership or team-development focus, a ropes course or structured challenge program can be transformative.
I’ve personally participated in the low and high ropes programming at the CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, and what makes facilitated ropes programming different from recreational adventure is the debrief. The conversation afterward is where the real growth happens. If you’re booking this for leadership development, build time into your schedule to process it.
In addition to the CYO Camp, eXplore Brown County and other outdoor camps in the area (including Waycross) offer ropes elements and team-focused programming.
These experiences are intentional, facilitated, and designed to stretch comfort zones in a controlled way.
Group Planning Tip: This is not a casual add-on. Clarify your group goals ahead of time so facilitators can tailor the experience appropriately.
Tours & Tastings at Local Wineries & Distilleries
Not every memorable group moment has to involve physical effort. Sometimes what you really need is a place to gather, linger, and let conversation unfold naturally.
Tastings and distillery tours work especially well for celebration weekends, girlfriend trips, leadership retreats, or reunion-style gatherings where you want shared time without a packed schedule.
When I’m building a retreat or reunion itinerary, this category often becomes the emotional midpoint of the weekend. It’s structured enough to feel intentional, but relaxed enough that conversation deepens naturally.
Distillery tours & tastings at Hard Truth Hills
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
Hard Truth Hills is more than a tasting room—it’s a full campus experience built into the hills just outside Nashville.
Groups can book guided distillery tours, reserve tasting experiences, or even schedule cocktail-making classes. There’s also a full-service restaurant and outdoor seating areas that make it easy to transition from structured tour to relaxed social time.
I’ve seen groups build an entire afternoon here: start with an ATV tour or team activity, move into a tasting, and end with dinner and live music on the patio. It works well because you don’t have to relocate. Once you’re there, everything flows.
What makes Hard Truth different from downtown tasting rooms is scale. Parking is easier. Seating is built for groups. There’s space to spread out. For larger parties, that physical layout matters more than people realize.
Group Planning Tip: For larger groups, contact Hard Truth directly about tour capacity and dining reservations. Fall weekends especially require advance planning.
If your group is larger than 6-8, I strongly recommend calling directly instead of relying on online booking. Coordinating dining + tours simultaneously can get complicated quickly.
Build Your Own Winery & Distillery Tasting Afternoon
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly, but Best with Advance Booking for Groups
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
Beyond Hard Truth, you can make your own local tasting tour by visiting nearby spots like the Brown County Winery, Range 46 Wine Co, or any of the winery tasting rooms in downtown Nashville.
Or head to Bear Wallow Distillery in Gnaw Bone for a ‘farm-to-table’ tour and tasting experience.
This option works best when treated as a self-paced experience. It’s easy, social, and everyone can participate at whatever level they feel comfortable with.
If Hard Truth is your centralized, all-in-one destination, this approach is more of a progressive tasting walk. It’s lighter, more flexible, and better suited for smaller groups or break-out time.
Group Planning Tip: If your group is larger than 8–10 people, call ahead. Most tasting rooms can accommodate walk-ins, but advance notice makes the experience smoother for everyone.
Bear Wallow Distillery, Brown County Winery’s main location, Range 46 Wine Co, Salt Creek Winery Tasting Room, and Country Heritage Winery Tasting Room are all the best options for space and layout for larger groups.
Live Music & Entertainment for groups
Evenings are where group dynamics either deepen or drift.
In Brown County, you don’t need complicated logistics to create something memorable. Because the town is small and walkable, it’s surprisingly easy to anchor a night around one shared experience—a concert, a comedy show, live music on a patio—and let the rest of the evening unfold naturally.
Whether you’re planning something elevated and ticketed or casual and come-as-you-are, these are the entertainment options that work especially well for groups.
See a Show at the Brown County Music Center
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
The Brown County Music Center brings nationally recognized artists to a venue that still feels intimate. If your group trip lines up with a show you love, this is one of the easiest ways to anchor a full evening.
Dinner beforehand, show together, unwind around a fire afterward…it practically builds itself into your itinerary.
Because seating is assigned, it works especially well for larger groups who want a shared experience without managing moving parts.
For retreats, I like placing a ticketed show on the second night rather than the first. By then, the group has settled in, and the shared experience feels cohesive instead of overwhelming.
Group Planning Tip: Purchase tickets early for popular artists, and contact the box office if you need assistance seating a larger group together.
Attend a Performance at the Brown County Playhouse
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
The Brown County Playhouse offers a mix of concerts, theatrical performances, and special events in a smaller, community-rooted venue that still offers excellent entertainment.
This is a great option if your group wants entertainment that feels local and approachable, rather than high-production.
It’s easy to pair with a downtown dinner and keeps everyone together in one space for the evening. Compared to the Music Center, the Playhouse feels more intimate and locally rooted. If your group prefers something lower-key or community-driven, this is often the better fit.
Group Planning Tip: Check the performance calendar in advance and reserve tickets early if your group size is larger than 8–10 people.
Be Wowed at The Amazing Dennis Comedy Magic Show
- Best For: Families, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
The Amazing Dennis hosts regularly scheduled weekly comedy magic shows at his shop in Antique Alley that can accommodate up to 16 guests, and he’s also available for private bookings. This is one of those rare experiences that feels effortless but still lands big with a group.
It’s interactive, it’s funny, it works across age groups, and because it doesn’t run late into the night, it’s ideal for multigenerational trips. We hosted my daughters’ birthday parties here one year (the kids were all between 10 and 13), and they all had a great time.
For leadership groups, it also functions beautifully as a lighthearted reset between more structured programming.
Group Planning Tip: Buy tickets in advance for public shows. If booking privately, coordinate dates early. Availability is limited.
Plan an Evening at Story Inn
- Best For: Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate and Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
The tiny historic “town” of Story—anchored by the Story Inn—proudly leans into its tagline: “One inconvenient location since 1851.”
Between the monthly comedy nights, live music events, and special seasonal gatherings, a trip to the Story Inn is an easy way to make an evening feel intentional.
I often recommend Story when groups want something that feels elevated but still intimate and one-of-a-kind. It’s an especially great option for milestone celebrations or retreat dinners with built-in entertainment. But because it requires a short scenic drive, this works best when you commit to making it the evening’s focal point rather than squeezing it between other plans.
They also host private events, which can be helpful for leadership or celebration groups who want a more exclusive setting.
Group Planning Tip: Story is around a 25 minute drive from Nashville and sits on winding backroads. Plan transportation and timing carefully, especially if your group will be returning after dark. The Story Inn has multiple lodging options if your group would prefer to stay on-site.
Try Out Line Dancing at Mike’s Dance Barn
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Moderate Activity
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly
- Weather: Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Team-Building, Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
Mike’s Dance Barn is playful, approachable, and distinctly Brown County.
Line dancing lessons and themed dance nights create instant shared energy. You don’t have to know how to dance, because yheir instructors will help you figure it out. And the laughs and mistakes along the way are all part of the fun and what will make the night memorable.
This works particularly well for girlfriend groups or families who want something interactive without committing to a full production-style event. I love that their dance lessons and events are typically good for all ages. My kids love the line dancing lessons, and I’ve seen this work beautifully for family reunions that want something interactive but not overproduced.
The space can also be rented for private events (although I don’t think that choice includes the line dancing lessons 😉).
Group Planning Tip: Check the weekly schedule in advance. Typically, Monday nights are line dancing lessons and Tuesdays are for the weekly Dart Club, but they’ll often add other nights for live music and dancing.
Catch Weekly Live Music Throughout Town
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Drop-In Friendly
- Weather: Some are Indoor, Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
If you’d rather keep things flexible, these spots make it easy to grab food, drinks, and enjoy live music without committing everyone to the same plan.
- Brown County Inn – A longtime local staple that hosts year-round live music from Wednesday to Saturday evenings. It’s casual, familiar, and easy for groups to enjoy together.
- Country Heritage Winery – By day it’s a tasting room, but on Friday and Saturday nights year-round, you can stop by to enjoy live music that pairs well with small groups and relaxed conversation.
- Ferguson House Beer Garden – A group favorite for a reason. There’s space to spread out, on-site food and drinks, and frequent live music during warmer months. It’s especially good for groups who want to linger, talk, and move around without feeling rushed.
And that’s just the start. Live music is a near-constant throughout Brown County year-round, but especially during the warmer months.
You don’t have to over-plan this part of your itinerary—just check the event calendar to see what’s happening during your group’s visit and go with the flow. Just remember that seating at smaller venues fills quickly during fall and festival weekends.
Group Planning Tip: Arrive early for larger groups to secure seating together, especially during peak seasons.
Attend a Festival at Bill Monroe Music Park
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Advance Booking Required
- Weather: Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests, Something Celebration-Worthy
If your visit aligns with one of the festivals at Bill Monroe Music Park, it can completely change the energy of your weekend.
Bluegrass festivals, themed gatherings, and special events bring in regional crowds but maintain a relaxed, family-friendly feel.
For reunion-style trips or girlfriend getaways that want an all-day (or all weekend) event to anchor their itinerary around, this is a great option. This is less of a “drop in for an hour” activity and more of a commit-and-immerse experience, which makes it powerful when it aligns with your group’s interests.
Group Planning Tip: Review festival schedules and ticket requirements well in advance. Their on-site cabins and campgrounds fill quickly during major events.
Self-Guided & Flexible Downtown Experiences
Not every block of time needs a reservation. In fact, some of the best group moments in Brown County happen when you intentionally leave space for wandering.
Downtown Nashville is compact and walkable. That alone makes it incredibly group-friendly. You can spread out without losing each other. People can opt in or out without disrupting the whole schedule. And regrouping is easy.
These experiences work especially well when you want flexibility, decompression time, or something that doesn’t require advance booking.
But wandering works best when it’s intentional. Large groups drifting without a loose plan can quickly turn into fragmented groups. The key is giving structure without rigidity.
Challenge yourselves to a scavenger hunt in downtown Nashville
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Year-Round Option, but Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Team-Building, Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
A simple scavenger hunt turns a casual downtown stroll into something interactive. You don’t need anything complicated. Look for specific storefront details. Historic markers. Local art. Hidden alleyways. Create small teams and give them a time limit.
You can make your own version, or download my free Nashville Scavenger Hunt to really keep it easy. And because downtown is so walkable, no one feels stressed about logistics.
I’ve seen this work especially well for families because it ‘gamifies’ keeping everyone moving and talking and working together, no matter their age or interests.
For retreats, I often use this as a first-day activity. It lowers social walls quickly without asking anyone to share anything personal too soon. And people tend to collaborate naturally when there’s a light mission involved.
Group Planning Tip: Keep the challenge simple and short. The goal is connection and exploration, not competition burnout.
Just keep group size in mind. If you’re managing 15+ people, splitting into smaller teams makes the experience smoother for both your group and the local businesses.
Turn Downtown Into a Taste-Test Challenge
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Icebreakers, Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
One of our favorite ways to explore any town is by turning eating into a mini competition. Our kids love cooking shows and pretending to be judges, so we started creating simple “taste test challenges” whenever we travel. And downtown Nashville makes this incredibly easy.
The idea is simple: Pick one category. Try it in a few different places. Declare a winner.
For families, especially with kids, this is incredibly fun to do in real time. Walk to different fudge shops. Compare ice cream flavors. Sample fresh cinnamon rolls and donuts. Let the kids debate which one deserves the crown.
But if you’re hosting a truly large group (think 10+ people), downtown shop spaces can feel tight. In that case, it works better to designate one or two “runners” to pop into shops, purchase small portions from a few locations, and bring everything back to your lodging for a group tasting.
You can:
- Grab fudge from multiple candy shops
- Pick up different pastries or donuts
- Buy spice blends or olive oils to sample together
- Compare local coffee drinks
If you’re hosting a retreat and eating out most of your meals, you can also weave the challenge into your restaurant choices. Maybe it’s fried biscuits and apple butter. Maybe it’s a signature cocktail. Order it consistently at different spots and compare.
It can be as simple or as elaborate as you want.
What makes this work so well for groups is that it’s low stakes. Some people go all in. Others just vote. It sparks conversation without forcing it, and that’s exactly what a good icebreaker should do. I’ve used this with both my own family and retreat groups, and it consistently sparks conversation without anyone feeling put on the spot.
Group Planning Tip: Keep it focused on one category and limit it to fewer than 5 comparisons. The goal is playful connection, not decision fatigue.
Divide & Conquer Boutique Shopping (Then Regroup for Dinner)
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Year-Round Option
- Works Well When You Need: Good for Mixed Interests
Shopping in Nashville works for groups not because everyone shops the same way, but because they don’t have to.
The downtown district is compact and filled with locally owned boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and specialty stores tucked into side streets and courtyards.
Some guests browse art. Others hunt for gifts. A few grab coffee and people-watch. Then you meet back up and share what you found. That flexibility is exactly why this works so well for retreats and reunions.
For retreats, I’ve noticed this works especially well as a mid-afternoon activity when energy naturally dips. Giving people autonomy for an hour often results in better engagement later that evening.
Group Planning Tip: Set a regroup time and location before you split up. It keeps things relaxed instead of chaotic.
Walk the Salt Creek Trail for an Easy Nature Break
- Best For: Families, Corporate and Wellness Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible, Moderate Activity
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Year-Round Option, but Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Creative & Reflective, Good for Mixed Interests
If your group wants a dose of nature without driving to the State Park, the Salt Creek Trail is an easy win.
It’s accessible from town and offers a paved, quick walk that still feels removed from the bustle of downtown.
I like recommending this for retreat groups who need a quiet conversation walk between more structured sessions. It’s simple, accessible, and doesn’t require special gear. I’ve had some of the most meaningful side conversations of a retreat happen on that short stretch of trail. It’s long enough to move, short enough to feel manageable.
Group Planning Tip: This is an option year-round, but works best for groups in comfortable walking weather. Wear appropriate footwear, especially after rain, as the pavement can be slick.
Use Antique Alley & the Ferguson House Beer Garden as a Group Home Base
- Best For: Families, Girlfriend Getaways, Corporate Retreats
- Energy Level: Low-Key & Flexible
- Structure: Self-Guided Experience
- Weather: Year-Round Option, but Best in Warm Weather
- Works Well When You Need: Kid-Friendly Entertainment, Good for Mixed Interests
If you’re managing a larger group, sometimes the smartest strategy is choosing a hub.
Antique Alley’s courtyard area and the Ferguson House Beer Garden provide space to gather without committing to a formal event. People can rotate in and out. Grab a drink. Browse nearby shops. Sit and talk. Catch live music when it’s happening.
This works especially well when not everyone wants the same thing at the same time, but you still want a shared anchor point for the group to gather. For larger groups, I often suggest establishing this as a designated regroup location. It gives everyone freedom without the constant “Where are you?” texts.
Group Planning Tip: Arrive earlier in the evening during peak seasons to secure enough seating for your group.
Group Lodging Designed for Gathering
Of course, the best group experiences aren’t just about what you do, they’re about where you return to at the end of the day.
When you’re planning a retreat, reunion, or leadership weekend, lodging isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s where conversations spill over after dinner. Where debriefs happen naturally. Where someone stays up too late on the patio. Where quiet moments unfold before the day begins again.
That’s where the Brown County Barn Burner comes in.
I didn’t design the Barn Burner to be just another short-term rental. I designed it specifically for groups, because I was hosting groups and couldn’t find a layout that truly worked.
At the Barn Burner, your guests stay under one roof—in four private units—with shared gathering space built in, rather than scattering across multiple cabins. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Four private lodging units under one roof — so everyone has space, but no one is scattered across town
- An on-site Event Space that eliminates the need to rent a separate venue for workshops, meetings, or shared meals
- A rooftop patio that naturally becomes the hub for morning coffee, sunset recaps, or late-night conversations
- A downtown Nashville location — meaning many of the group activities in this guide are walkable
→ For retreat leaders, that means fewer moving parts.
→ For families, that means connection without crowding.
→ For corporate groups, that means built-in meeting space without renting an external venue.
You can host a creative workshop in the morning, walk to lunch, explore downtown in the afternoon, and end the night on the rooftop, without loading into cars or coordinating multiple addresses.
It simplifies the entire experience. And when logistics are simple, connection becomes easier.
I’ve watched groups arrive slightly guarded on Friday and leave on Sunday exchanging numbers, planning future trips, and lingering in the parking lot because no one quite wants it to end. That shift doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when the space supports the experience.
Help Your Group Do More Than Just “Meet Up”

Whether you’re planning:

- A girlfriend getaway
- A wellness retreat
- A leadership offsite
You can build something wonderful here, without overcomplicating it. And if you want a space intentionally built to support all of it—from creative workshops to rooftop debriefs—the Barn Burner was designed with that exact purpose in mind.
