The weather in Southern Indiana can be unpredictable. Sometimes it pours all day, sometimes the cold cuts through everything, and sometimes the summer heat makes even a short walk uncomfortable. And when that happens, whether you’re visiting for the weekend, planning a local staycation, or suddenly stuck inside with bored kids, it’s easy to think: “Okay… now what?”
That’s exactly why I created this guide. After nearly a decade of living here, raising two kids, and helping our guests at the Barn Burner navigate every kind of weather, I’ve rounded up the very best indoor things to do in Nashville, Indiana—plus a few cozy, covered-but-not-quite-indoor options that are perfect for “bad weather” days.
In this post, you’ll find ideas for:
- Creative studios & hands-on activities
- Tours, tastings, and indoor breweries/distilleries
- Bookstores, boutiques & relaxing self-care stops
- Art galleries, museums & cultural attractions
- Live music, magic shows & rainy-day events
- Cozy ways to unwind back at your lodging
Whether you’re dodging rain, escaping the heat, or just craving a break from the outdoors, this list will help you make the most of your time in Nashville and Brown County, no matter what the forecast says.

Visit Brown County State Park (Yes, Even in “Bad” Weather)
Don’t rule out Brown County State Park just because the forecast looks rough. Some of the best parts of the park are open year-round, and may actually be more enjoyable in the ‘off season,’ when it’s not crowded.
Nature Center at the Brown County State Park
If you’re looking for a fully indoor stop, the Nature Center is the place to go. It’s open year-round (with reduced winter hours), and has exhibits on local wildlife, a bird observation room, a snake enclosure, and lots of hands-on stuff for kids.
You’ll also find interpretive staff, a junior naturalist program, seasonal talks, and educational events listed on the state park calendar. It’s low-key, warm, and a great way to learn something new about the plants, animals, and history of the park without committing to a full hike.

Indoor Waterpark at Abe Martin Lodge
This one surprises a lot of people, but there’s actually a full indoor aquatic center right in the park. If you’re staying at Abe Martin Lodge or the nearby Brown County State Park cabins, your wristband is included, but day passes are also available to the public.
There’s a lazy river, waterslide, fountains, a zero-entry pool, and a hot tub. It’s clean, heated, and great for kids and grown-ups alike. Open daily from 10am to 9pm, but hours can change, so double-check before you go.

Park Shelterhouses
Some of the best rainy-day moments happen in the shelterhouses. Find one, settle in, and enjoy the sound of the rain coming through the trees. Many are available for public use if they’re not reserved.
Here are some of my personal favorites:
- Strahl Lake Shelter is close to the waterfall and hiking trail, and partially enclosed with fireplaces and nearby modern bathrooms.
- Hoosier’s Nest feels like a little cabin, with porches, vaulted ceilings, and a wide-open field out front. The Fire Tower is across the street, and you can climb it during breaks in the weather.
- The Lower Shelter is commonly booked, but if it’s available, it’s a great option, especially for bigger groups or families.
Self-Guided Auto Tour
If hiking or biking isn’t an option, then check out the park’s self-guided auto tour as an alternative. Set your trip odometer to zero at the Nature Center, and follow the signs to each of the five stops.
It’s an easy way to experience the park’s beauty without getting soaked, and the overlooks are always magnificent, even on a cold or foggy day.
Create Something
Sometimes the best way to spend a few indoor hours is to get your hands messy and test your creativity. Whether you’re traveling with kids, planning a girls’ weekend, or just looking for a new experience, these local studios make it easy to create something beautiful and take a piece of Brown County home with you.
Our Little World Studio
This is hands-down one of the most joyful spaces in town. Part boutique, part café, and part creative haven, Our Little World Studio invites you to settle in, order a beverage of your choice, shop a little, and make something creative…all in one stop.
Their Make & Take Makerspace and Wine & Craft DIY Bar are both packed with project options: paint-your-own pottery, candle making, custom art kits, a Slime Bar and more. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are also usually accepted.
There’s also a little café in the back (Percy’s Perk Arthouse Coffee) with coffee, slushies, espresso, cocoa, and their fun “Design-a-Donut” bar, which definitely keeps the creative energy going.
With all these options under one roof, Our Little World Studio is perfect for families, date nights, bachelorette groups, and even scout troops or team-building events. We’ve even hosted our daughters’ shared birthday party here before! They had a blast.
Located just west of the courthouse and steps from Big Woods Pizza, it’s an easy add-on to your day in downtown Nashville.

Second Story Studio
Upstairs in the historic Village Green Building (Brown County’s original “skyscraper”), Second Story Studio blends art gallery, studio space, and creative classroom. They host a range of workshops and classes throughout the year, from casual group workshops to multi-week courses in oil painting, watercolor, or drawing.
This is also one of the best spots in town to see what local artists are working on. Between rotating exhibits and the open studio vibe, it’s easy to get inspired, and maybe even sign up for a class on the spot.
Tours & Tastings
Rainy day? Cold snap? Just not up for hiking? A drink and a tour might be just the thing. From laid-back tastings to immersive, hands-on experiences, Brown County has some excellent options to sip, learn, and explore, all indoors.
Hard Truth Hills
If you want options—lots of options—then Hard Truth Hills is the place. Set on 325 wooded acres, this destination distillery offers a wide range of indoor experiences, from guided distillery tours and whiskey tastings to cocktail-making classes and private group events.
They also offer more immersive and creative experiences, such as mixology workshops, moonshine-making, and ATV tours. Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon fan or just curious to try something new, there’s an experience for every interest level.
Some activities are quick drop-ins, while others last a couple of hours and may require a reservation, especially on weekends. If you’re planning a visit, check their website in advance for the most up-to-date offerings and availability.
Bear Wallow Distillery
This small-batch distillery keeps it simple, local, and welcoming. At Bear Wallow Distillery, you can do a tasting flight of up to six whiskies, grab a seasonal cocktail, or just browse the gift shop for whiskey-themed finds.
They also offer Farm-to-Fifth Tours every Saturday at noon, 2:00, and 4:00 PM, no reservations needed. These 45-minute tours include a full tasting and walk you through the history and production process of Indiana whiskey. Open seven days a week, with slightly longer hours on weekends.
Wineries & Wine Tastings
Nashville has a handful of great wineries with indoor tasting rooms where you can relax with a flight and learn more about local wines. For a breakdown of your options—including hours, tasting notes, and food pairings—check out this full guide to Nashville, Indiana wineries.

Craft Beer Flights at Big Woods or Moontown Brewing
If you’re more into hops than spirits, you’ve got a few good options for beer lovers, too:
- Big Woods Pizza: Right in downtown Nashville, they offer beer flights and full meals, all featuring local brews from Quaff ON! Brewing Co and spirits from Hard Truth Distilling.
- Restaurant at Hard Truth: Located on the same campus as the distillery, this spot pairs a full menu with both beer and spirit flights.
- Moontown Brewing – Nashville Location: Pet- and kid-friendly, with seasonal brews and indoor seating. It’s a relaxed place to enjoy a pint or sample a full flight in any weather.
Pamper Yourself
Sometimes the best thing to do is slow down and treat yourself, and Nashville has you covered. Whether you’re looking for a soothing massage, a full spa experience, or just a little “me time” wandering the shops, these indoor options are a perfect fit for a rainy or chilly day.
Book a Massage or Spa Treatment
A little pampering goes a long way, especially if the weather outside is dreary or you’ve been on your feet exploring all day. Nashville is home to several massage therapists and day spas that offer everything from full body massages to facials, reiki, body scrubs, and reflexology.
I’ve created separate, detailed guides to all the massage options and spa experiences in Brown County, which you can check out for more information. Options range from serene spa environments to more therapeutic, deep tissue sessions.
Get Your Nails Done at NBC Nails
Located right next to the Barn Burner, NBC Nails is a convenient stop if you’re staying nearby or just want a quick beauty boost. They offer manicures, pedicures, and gel polish options, all with a friendly, no-frills vibe. You can walk in or call ahead, but they’re typically pretty easy to get into during the week.
Go Shopping
If your idea of self-care is retail therapy, there are plenty of great options in town that don’t require too much time in the elements. Brown County Antique Mall, Bear Hardware, and Heritage Mall (home of the Heritage Candy Store) are all larger indoor spaces that you can wander around for a while. All great choices if you’re trying to avoid the weather outside altogether.
And even if the skies are gloomy, most of downtown Nashville’s shops are clustered close together and walkable with an umbrella. Focus your time on areas like Antique Alley, Franklin Square, and the blocks surrounding Van Buren and Main Streets. These spots house many of my personal favorite shops and are easy to explore even in light weather.

Explore Arts & Culture
Brown County has long been a magnet for artists, storytellers, and creatives, and there’s no better way to soak in the local culture on a rainy day than by stepping inside its galleries, museums, and studios.
Brown County Art Gallery
Founded in 1926 by early impressionist artists, the Historic Brown County Art Gallery is a cornerstone of Indiana’s art history. With more than 15,000 square feet of gallery space, it houses a significant permanent collection and showcases the work of over 60 current artists.
Rotating exhibits, artist demos, and educational programs make this an enriching stop for all ages. Admission is free, and the space is fully wheelchair accessible.
Brown County Art Guild
Located right in the heart of downtown Nashville, the Brown County Art Guild continues the tradition of supporting representational artists from the Midwest. You’ll find both historical works and contemporary pieces from today’s leading regional artists. The Guild also hosts rotating exhibits, workshops, and special events throughout the year.
T.C. Steele State Historic Site
If you’re up for a short drive, visit the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, home and studio of one of Indiana’s most prominent artists. While the extensive gardens and grounds are a major draw in warmer months, the house and studio tours offer fascinating insight into Steele’s life and legacy.
You’ll see his original workspaces, period furnishings, and rotating art displays inside the Large Studio. Timed, indoor tours are available Wednesday through Sunday.

Brown County History Center & Pioneer Village
For a broader look at local history and culture, the Brown County History Center offers indoor exhibits that span early pioneer days through the formation of the county’s famous art colony.
The attached Pioneer Village features historic cabins, a blacksmith shop, and a one-room schoolhouse. While some of the Pioneer Village buildings are only open seasonally, the museum’s main building is open Tuesday through Sunday year-round and is a perfect stop on a drizzly day.
Check the Event Calendar: Indoor Events, Live Music & Entertainment
If you’re looking for something fun to do inside, it’s worth checking the local event calendar, because chances are, something’s going on. From live music and magic shows to art classes and family movies, there’s almost always an indoor event happening somewhere in or around Nashville.
Magic Shows at Denny’s Magic Showroom
Denny’s Magic Showroom is a hidden gem with small-theater charm and big-time entertainment. “The Amazing Dennis Show” runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 PM throughout most of the year.
Dennis blends comedy, sleight of hand, and audience interaction in a way that keeps everyone—kids and adults alike—laughing and guessing. Seating is limited (just 20 guests per show), so advance reservations are best.
Events at the Brown County Public Library
The Brown County Public Library offers a huge variety of free indoor events all year-round. Think storytime for little ones, craft clubs for teens and adults, book discussions, movie viewings, and special programs like balloon sculpting or cultural dance classes.
It’s one of the best low-key, all-ages indoor spaces in town, and an especially great resource for families. You’ll find the latest schedule on the library event calendar.
Live Music at Indoor Venues
You don’t have to wait for good weather to enjoy live music around here. Several local spots offer indoor music year-round, including:
- Brown County Inn (events Wednesday through Saturday, year-round, including open mic and full bands)
- Country Heritage Winery – Nashville Tasting Room
- Rafters Food & Spirits
- Mike’s Music & Dance Barn
- 19th Hole Sports Bar
- Story Inn Still Tavern (21+ only)
👉 You can find a full breakdown by day of the week in this live music guide.
Brown County Playhouse
The Brown County Playhouse offers plays, concerts, movies, and more in a vintage downtown theater with about 400 seats. It’s a great rainy-day or winter night option if you want something close to the shops and restaurants in the Village. Showtimes vary, so it’s always a good idea to check the Playhouse event calendar.

Brown County Music Center
For a bigger night out, the Brown County Music Center brings in national acts—everything from rock and country to comedians and tribute shows—in a comfortable indoor venue that seats about 2,000.
It’s a local favorite for good reason: great sound, easy parking, and no bad seats. While shows seem to typically occur Thursday through Sunday, they sometimes pop up midweek, too.
👉 Check out my full guide to what to expect at the Music Center for everything you need to know before you go.

Cozy Up and Slow Down
Some days are made for slowing down. Whether the weather calls for it or you’re just overdue for a break, Nashville has plenty of ways to get cozy, stay entertained, and recharge, all without needing to go anywhere fast.
Curl Up with a Good Book
A quiet afternoon with a book might be the most underrated way to spend time here. Fallen Leaf Books is a new and used bookstore that always has something unexpected on the shelves, while Naughty Dog Books offers a curated mix of new releases, cozy reads, and clever gifts.
Grab something new to read and head back to your cabin, suite, or favorite rainy-day nook.

Play a Game (Old Favorite or New Find)
Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, games are always a good indoor option. Bring your favorites from home (check out a round-up of our favorites here) or pick up something new from The Toy Chest in downtown Nashville. They carry everything from classics like UNO and Sequence to quirky strategy games and kid-friendly options.
Then just find a table—at your lodging, a coffee shop, or one of the many shelterhouses if it’s just drizzling—and settle in.
Movie Day, Brown County Style
When it’s truly a stay-in kind of day, turn it into a movie marathon. Stop by Nashville Fudge Kitchen to build your perfect snack spread, with popcorn, fudge, caramel corn, and maybe a few handmade candies while you’re at it. Back at your lodging, fire up a cozy movie and let the day drift by, snack in hand. You’ll barely notice the weather outside.
Settle Into a Local Coffee Shop
If you’re not ready to totally hide out, but still want to keep it low-key, head to one of Nashville’s most comfortable coffee shops.
Sweetea’s Tea Shop has plush seating and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for reading or people-watching with a cup of chai or seasonal tea. Common Grounds is another solid choice—it’s welcoming, warm, and easy to spend an hour or two just hanging out.
You’ll find all the local coffee shop options here, each with its own vibe and treats.
Now You’re Ready to Enjoy Your Time in Brown County, No Matter the Weather
Bad weather here isn’t usually as bad as it looks, and it almost never lasts all day. After nearly a decade living in Brown County, I’ve watched solid-looking storm systems break up just before they hit, or dump rain at one end of town while the other stays completely dry. That’s life in the hills.
Still, it helps to be prepared. Pack an umbrella or a warm layer, wear shoes that can handle a little mud, and have a backup plan in your pocket. You might only need an indoor activity for a couple of hours, or you might find something you love so much, it becomes the highlight of your trip.
Whether you’re dodging a downpour, escaping the cold, or taking a break from summer heat, there’s no shortage of indoor things to do in Nashville, Indiana. And now, you’ve got them all in one place for easy reference the next time you need it!
