I’m not giving this up…
My 2025 promise to you.

We’re already halfway through January, so I might’ve missed the New Year’s resolution boat. But between the holidays, kids home from school (and five extra snow days off last week), I’m fully embracing the “it’s better late than never” mantra.

And here’s the thing—I’ve never actually been big on resolutions or arbitrary deadlines anyway.

What am I big on? Creating the most helpful, on-the-ground info about Brown County that I can. And that’s something I’m not giving up in 2025.

Let me explain.

When I started Tanglewood Hideaway, my goal was to be a reliable, local resource for all things Brown County—helping you plan amazing visits and experience everything this place has to offer.

I didn’t want to just scratch the surface with generic tips you could find anywhere. I wanted to go deeper, share personal experiences, and answer the questions you actually have.

And that’s what I’m sticking to.

Take this email for example. Originally, I’d planned to share all my favorite winter hikes in Brown County this week, plus tips for making winter hiking the absolute best. (Because it really is! No bugs, no sweat, and those stunning ridge views you can only get when the trees are bare.)

Simple enough, right? But as I got into it, I realized just how much information I could share to make it truly helpful. Suddenly, one post turned into:

  • Dedicated guides for every major hiking area: Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest, Laura Hare Nature Preserve, and more.
  • A comprehensive ranking of 35+ trails by difficulty (from easy paved walks to rugged challenges).
  • Detailed trail maps, elevation charts, and notes pulled from my own hikes, as tracked by my Strava app.
  • A custom Google map with color-coded trailheads for every hike.

And here’s the thing. All those posts? They’re not quite finished yet.

But I’d rather take the time to make it all as thorough and accurate as possible than rush it just to check a box. Because you deserve more than “just fine” advice when planning your trip here.

So while my winter hiking posts aren’t live yet, I promise they’re coming soon. In the meantime, here’s the custom Google map I created with all the trailhead locations—it’s live and ready for you to use!

I’ll share the full hiking posts once they’re ready, but until then, I just want to say thank you for your patience and support.

Last week, I asked for your suggestions for the Barn Burner, and I loved reading everyone’s thoughtful responses.

Hearing your ideas and feedback reminded me why I started this in the first place: to be a local resource and help make exploring Brown County as easy and fun as possible.

That’s why I’m so committed to going the extra mile—whether it’s building detailed guides, crafting custom maps, or sharing personal tips I’ve learned from my own experiences. And in 2025, I’m doubling down on that commitment.

Which leads me to my next question: If there’s a Brown County guide or resource you wish existed—or if you think there’s a topic that’s missing info and would make your trips here even better—I’d love to hear about it.

Just hit reply and let me know what’s on your mind! And as always, if you have questions about hiking, dining, or anything else Brown County-related, I’m here to help.

Thank you for being here and supporting what I do—it means the world to me to help you explore and enjoy everything this incredible place has to offer.

Stay warm and get outside when you can – you won’t believe how much it helps with the winter blues,

Kara

P.S. If you check out the trail map and are curious, some of my favorite winter hikes are Trail 10 and Trail 9 at Brown County State Park, any of the loops at Laura Hare Nature Preserve, the upper trail at Trevlac Bluffs Nature Preserve, and the Browning Mountain trail. Let me know if you hike any of them!

My husband, Clint, and I midway through hiking Trail 9 at Brown County State Park last January. I will shout it from the rooftops for the rest of my life—winter hiking is the best hiking!
