Group trips don’t have to be stressful, I swear! Want to know what I know?

Five years ago this month, my husband Clint and I were finally on the brink of making our biggest dream come true: building the Brown County Barn Burner.

After years of dreaming, planning, and more than a few setbacks, we closed on our construction loan in March 2020. (And wow—what a year that turned out to be 🫠.)

From the very beginning, we designed the Barn Burner with one purpose in mind: creating a space where groups could gather and actually enjoy their time together.

Why? Because that’s how we travel and host ourselves. Big family reunions, milestone birthdays, retreats, weekends with friends, we’ve done it all—and we’ve lived through the challenges of trying to make things work in spaces that weren’t built for big groups.

That’s why we made sure the Barn Burner has:

  • Separate bedrooms and units for privacy—whether it’s for nap time, quiet time, or recharging after a full day.
  • Communal spaces for making memories, like our rooftop patio, fire table, and Event Space.
  • Walkability to downtown Nashville, so everyone can explore, shop, and grab coffee without needing a carpool plan.

And we didn’t stop there. The Barn Burner is stocked with all the thoughtful details that make group trips easier—highchairs and Pack ‘n Plays for little ones, toys and games for all ages, and fully equipped kitchens for shared meals.

(Heck, I even started Tanglewood Hideaway, this travel blog, to help our guests—and everyone else—make the most of their time in Brown County!)

Over the years, I’ve hosted everything from my own family gatherings to the REIGNITE Retreat at the Barn Burner. Because I’ve stayed there with family and friends myself, I can confidently say this: the space works.

But I know that when you’re at the beginning, planning a group trip can feel overwhelming. And while we’d love to host everyone at the Barn Burner to make things easier, I also know that’s not always possible.

So here are a few tips I’ve learned that make group trips easier every time:

  1. Accept that not everything has to be done together. Give people the freedom to explore solo or in smaller groups, while still creating moments to connect.
  2. Plan one group meal a day. Mealtime is where the magic happens—no need to over-schedule beyond that.
  3. Choose a space that actually works for your group. When the setup is right, everything feels easier (and way more fun).

If you’re feeling stuck with planning a group trip, I’d love to help. Whether or not you’ll be staying at the Barn Burner, reply to this email—I’m happy to point you in the right direction.
