Outdoor Things to Do in Brown County, Indiana

Brown County is a paradise for nature lovers, offering experiences ranging from peaceful hikes to adrenaline-filled adventures. Here are some can’t-miss outdoor activities to add to your itinerary.

Hike Some of Indiana’s Best Trails

Hiking in Brown County is always a highlight for me. Which trail I pick depends on the season and day of the week, but my go-to favorites year-round are:

  • Trail 10 (Fire Tower Loop) at Brown County State Park: It’s a moderate loop with stunning views that feels a little less crowded than some of the other trails.
  • Trail 8 at Brown County State Park: I prefer starting and ending at the Tulip Tree Shelter rather than the West Lookout—doing this cuts off a long section of trail that follows the road and gives a quieter, more scenic experience.
  • Trails at Yellowwood State Forest and the Laura Hare Nature Preserve: Both are peaceful, lesser-known spots with a true back-to-nature feel.

Each trail offers its own unique views, from sweeping vistas to quiet forest alcoves, making every hike an adventure.

Bike the Midwest’s Top Mountain Biking Trails

Brown County is internationally known for its mountain biking trails, which cater to every skill level—from beginners to seasoned riders. Some of my daughters’ first biking adventures were on the beginner trails at Brown County State Park when they were just 5 and 6!

For rentals, lessons, or repairs, head to Brown County Bikes in Nashville. Their friendly team will set you up for success, whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out.

Kayak or Paddleboard on Peaceful Waters

If water is more your style, Yellowwood Lake and Crooked Creek are great for paddling. Rent a canoe or kayak from the Park Office or through Pathfinder Outfitters, who also offers guided trips if you’d like some local expertise while exploring the water.

For a unique twist, try paddleboarding at Yellowwood Lake. Simply Fitness offers beginner paddleboarding lessons and paddleboard yoga classes. You can bring your own board or use theirs for a tranquil and refreshing way to enjoy the water.

Ready for even more? eXplore Brown County also features paintball courses and ropes challenges that are great for groups or anyone wanting a bit of friendly competition.

Hearty Eats and Refreshing Brews

After a day of outdoor adventures, refueling is key—and Brown County has some excellent options. If you’re craving smoky, satisfying barbecue, Sugar Creek BBQ is a local favorite, offering classics like pulled pork, brisket, and their signature sides.

If pizza is more your thing, grab a table at Big Woods Pizza for great pizza alongside locally-made craft beer, or head to Brozinni Pizzeria for New York-style slices. (Their garlic knuckles are a local favorite!) For a quick bite, Gnaw Mart’s famous tenderloin sandwiches are a must-try.

When it’s time to wind down, Brown County’s craft breweries and distilleries provide the perfect backdrop. Hard Truth Hills offers more than just excellent craft cocktails and local beers—it’s also a scenic destination, with sprawling grounds, fire pits, and even guided tours.

If you prefer a more laid-back atmosphere, Moontown Brewing and Firebird Tap House combine great food and drinks with a welcoming, low-key vibe, making them ideal spots to recap your day over a cold one.
