Get Active
August in Brown County is all about enjoying the great outdoors. With the warm weather and stunning natural landscapes, there’s no better time to get moving and make the most of what this beautiful area has to offer. So grab your gear, get outside, and dive into the many active adventures waiting for you this month!
Take A Hike
While I love a good hike, August isn’t always the most ideal time to hit the trails in Brown County. The heat and humidity can be intense, and let’s not forget about the bugs! If you’re like me and still want to get out there, I recommend sticking to early morning hikes when it’s cooler and the bugs are a bit less aggressive. Plus, don’t forget the essentials: plenty of bug spray and water are a must.
When it comes to trail options in August, I tend to keep it simple. The Salt Creek Trail in town is a great choice—it’s more of a walk than a hike, but it’s beautiful, mostly shaded, and perfect for a quick morning stroll. If you’re looking for something a bit more rugged, the trails at Brown County State Park are always well-groomed, with vegetation pushed back from the edges, making them more manageable during the hot summer months.
Here’s a quick roundup of some best trail options for August:
- Salt Creek Trail: A 3/4 mile paved, multi-use path right in Nashville.
- Deer Run Park: Mowed walking paths just west of Nashville—another good option for a shorter, more leisurely walk.
- Brown County State Park: Indiana’s largest state park, offering over 20 miles of well-maintained hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging. The park’s wide, groomed trails make it a great choice for summer hiking, with plenty of shaded areas and stunning views from lookout points.
- An entrance fee is required, but it’s well worth it for the variety of trails and amenities available.
- If you happen to be staying in the campground or are willing to hike Trail 11 from Ogle Lake, check out Trail 9 loop from Taylor Ridge Campground – there’s a great creek and some perfect picnic spots at the bottom.
- Yellowwood State Forest: Multiple trails and loops, but be prepared for varying levels of difficulty. To beat the heat, check out the Jackson Creek trail spur at the north end of the lake and spend some time exploring the creek bed to beat the heat.
Whether you’re exploring the local parks or venturing into the wilderness, these trails offer a range of experiences. Just remember, August hiking in Brown County is all about timing—early mornings are your best friend!
Explore Brown County by Bike
Biking in August? Now that’s an activity I can really get behind! Unlike hiking, biking comes with its own built-in breeze, making it a perfect way to stay active even in the heat. Personally, I’m a huge fan of road biking, especially with my trusty e-bike—it makes those hills a little easier to conquer and lets me cover a lot of ground. If you’re more into mountain biking, though, August is still a great time to hit the trails, especially with the right prep.
Road Biking
For road biking enthusiasts, Brown County offers a challenging and scenic ride. Just be aware—our roads are hilly, winding, and sometimes gravelly, with little to no shoulder in many areas. That said, if you’re up for the challenge (or if you have an e-bike), the views and experience are well worth it. The Salt Creek Trail is an easy paved option for those looking to stay closer to town, or if you have little kids looking for somewhere to bike.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikers, on the other hand, will find some of the best single-track riding in the Midwest right here in Brown County. Just remember, there are some fees involved:
- Brown County State Park: As with hiking, there’s an entrance fee to the park. Plus, if you’re tackling anything above a Beginner-level trail, you’ll need an Indiana DNR Off-road Cycling (ORC) Permit. This goes for both adults and kids, and permits can be purchased at the park entrance, park office, or online.
- Crooked Creek Loop at Yellowwood State Forest: Definitely not for beginners, and yes, you’ll need that ORC permit here too.
- Hoosier National Forest & Nebo Ridge Trails: Entry is free, but riders aged 17 and older will need a Mountain Bike Trail Permit, which can be purchased online, in-person, or from local vendors like Brown County Bikes.
Before you head out, especially if it’s rained recently, check the trail conditions. The Brown County Mountain Biking Facebook group is a great resource—they update their logo to reflect trail safety, so you’ll know if it’s a good day to ride.
Whether you’re cruising the roads or hitting the trails, biking in Brown County in August offers a fantastic way to explore the area while staying cool(er) in the summer heat.
Get Out on the Water
August in Brown County is all about cooling off, and there’s no better way to do that than by getting out on the water. Whether you’re into boating, swimming, kayaking, or just exploring creeks, there’s something here for everyone.
Swimming
If you’re looking to take a dip, the pool at Brown County State Park is a classic choice—just keep in mind that in August, it’s only open on weekends through Labor Day. The entrance fee is just $3 per person, making it a budget-friendly option for a refreshing swim. But if you prefer a more natural setting, exploring the creek near the Strahl Lake parking lot or along the Jackson Creek Trail at Lake Yellowwood is a great way to cool down without spending a dime.
Paddling & Boating
August is also prime time for hitting the waterways. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or just getting started, Brown County’s lakes and streams offer plenty of options:
- Brown County State Park: The park has two serene lakes, Ogle Lake and Strahl Lake, perfect for a quiet day of paddling. Just remember, you’ll need to bring your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard since there are no rentals available on site. And don’t forget your Indiana DNR Lake Permit, which is required for all watercraft—even non-motorized ones.
- Yellowwood Lake: Another beautiful spot, with boat launch locations at both ends of the lake. You can also rent kayaks and rowboats through the park office—just give them a call ahead of time to check availability. It’s a peaceful place to paddle and take in the natural beauty of the area.
- Crooked Creek State Recreation Area: This lesser-known gem offers a more secluded experience, with waters that ultimately connect through to Lake Monroe. It’s a great spot for those looking to escape the crowds.
- Lake Lemon: If you’re venturing out to Lake Lemon, you’ll find it’s a popular spot for boating. You’ll have to pay a launch fee if you’re using the boat ramp, or you can access the lake without a ramp at spots like the Little Africa Wildlife Viewing Area.
- Lake Monroe Reservoir also stretches into Brown County, and you can rent pontoon boats and speed boats at Lake Monroe Boat Rental and Two Herons Marina in neighboring Monroe County to enjoy a day on the water with a little more ‘oomph.’
If you’re not sure where to start, or if you need a permit, it’s always a good idea to check the local regulations. An Indiana DNR Lake Permit is easy to get and ensures you’re covered no matter where you decide to paddle or boat.
Horseback Riding
August is the perfect time to experience Brown County’s natural beauty on horseback. Whether you’re looking for a guided trail ride or prefer to bring your own horse, there are options to suit every rider.
Guided Trail Rides
If you’re interested in a guided trail ride, you’ve got two fantastic options:
- Saddle Barn at Brown County State Park: Located in the heart of the park, the Saddle Barn offers a range of guided trail rides suitable for all experience levels. Choose from an easy 2.2-mile ride or a more challenging 3.3-mile route. They also have pony rides for the little ones and fun hayrides for groups. The Saddle Barn operates seasonally, so August is a great time to take advantage of this opportunity. For reservations and more details, you can reach them at (812) 988-8166 or visit their website.
- Grandpa Jeff’s Trail Rides: For a more personal experience, head over to Grandpa Jeff’s Trail Rides in nearby Morgantown. Jeff’s passion for horses is infectious, and he offers both a 45-minute trail ride for $30 and a longer 1 hour and 45-minute ride for $60. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider, Jeff’s guided rides are all about creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience. To book your ride, give him a call at (812) 272-0702.
Both options provide a wonderful way to explore the scenic trails of Brown County while enjoying the companionship of these majestic animals.
Bring Your Own Horse
For those who have their own horses, Brown County State Park is a rider’s paradise. The park features approximately 70 miles of bridle trails that wind through its steep, forested hills, offering a truly immersive experience in nature.
The Horsemen’s Campground at the park is designed with horse enthusiasts in mind, providing both primitive and electric campsites. Day-use parking spots are also available if you’re just visiting for the day. Each horse you bring into the park will need a Horse Tag, which costs $5 per day or $20 annually. These can be purchased at the park or online through the DNR.
Whether you choose a guided ride or explore the trails on your own, horseback riding in Brown County is a fantastic way to take in the beauty of the area during the warm days of August.

Indulge in Food & Drink
There are lots of great restaurants to choose from in Brown County year round, but let’s be honest…August in Brown County is basically an excuse to eat all the ice cream! With so many great spots to choose from, you’ll have no trouble finding your perfect sweet treat. Here are my favorites:
- The Chocolate Moose: Our family’s top pick! The Chocolate Moose has the latest hours in town, perfect for those late-night cravings. Their Blizz with homemade vanilla ice cream, cookie dough, and pecan mix-ins is a personal favorite. My kids love the Lemon Custard and Strawberry flavors, while my husband swears their Moose Chocolate Shake is the best chocolate shake he’s ever had (and trust me, he’s had a lot).
- Miller’s Ice Cream: Miller’s is the place to go for homemade ice cream with unique flavors like Persimmon and Black Walnut. Their hours can be a bit unpredictable, but it’s always worth the visit. I’m all about their Black Walnut or the classic Brown County Campfire when we get the chance to stop by.
- Fearrin’s Ice Cream & Yogurt Depot: Fearrin’s is a classic small-town ice cream shop, and it’s also where you can catch the Nashville Express Trolley. Their homemade sundaes and drumsticks are always a hit, especially when paired with a visit to the nearby Lawrence Family Glass Blowers shop.
- Nashville Fudge Kitchen: Last but definitely not least is the Nashville Fudge Kitchen. The moment you walk by, you’ll be hit with the most mouthwatering smells—everything they make is just divine. Besides fudge and caramel corn, they’re the only place in town that sells gelato.
