While I know it’s possible to find holiday magic wherever you are, I happen to think that there’s something special about Christmas in Nashville, Indiana that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s not just the lights or the live music or the smell of kettle corn and cinnamon-roasted nuts downtown, it’s the feeling that the whole town is leaning into joy.
From the twinkle of the Christmas Light Parade to the old-world charm of the Christkindl Market, Nashville turns into the kind of place where even locals pause to soak it in. And 2025 brings even more reasons to visit: new concerts, returning favorites, and festive weekend events that make planning a holiday trip easier than ever.
We’ve lived here since 2016 – aka, long enough to know which events are worth bundling up for, which spots get crowded, and where to warm up after a frosty walk through town. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, here’s what to expect in Brown County at Christmastime, and how to make the most of every twinkling moment.

See the Lights
One of the best parts of the holiday season is soaking up all the twinkling Christmas lights! Whether you’re strolling through town or driving around Brown County, the festive glow of holiday lights is everywhere, creating that cozy winter wonderland vibe we all love. Here are some must-see spots:
Christmas Lights in the Town of Nashville
Nashville, Indiana, already has that charming small-town feel all year long, but it really kicks things up a notch during the holidays! The entire town sparkles with white lights, wreaths, and festive decor—seriously, it’s like a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie.
You’ll find lights glowing on every corner (usually from around Thanksgiving through the beginning of January), making it perfect for an evening stroll. Don’t forget to grab a coffee or hot chocolate from one of the local coffee shops along the way to keep warm.
Looking for more than just the twinkle of downtown? Here are two annual events you won’t want to miss:
- The Annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting at the Brown County History Center – Head over to the Brown County History Center on Friday, November 28, 2025 from 5-7pm (with the tree lighting at 6pm) for this cozy tradition. There will be music, homemade cookies, hot chocolate, and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
- Christmas Light Parade – The Holiday Light Parade is a Nashville favorite! This year, it’s happening on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., and it’s a perfect way to cap off a day of holiday shopping or a visit to the Brown County Cristkindl Market. Bundle up and find a spot along the parade route to watch the festive floats go by, all decked out in lights. Plus, the Salvation Army will be collecting new, unwrapped toys along the way, so feel free to bring something to donate if you can!
NOTE: For more details on these events and more, check out my post that includes all the December events in Nashville and Brown County, Indiana.

Christmas Lights Around Brown County
If you’re looking to venture a little further outside of Nashville for more light displays, there are a couple of spots in Brown County that will definitely wow you.
- Check out the annual Winter Wonderland event at the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department in Helmsburg on Friday and Saturday evenings, December 5, 6, 12 and 13, from 6-8pm. Walk the self-guided trail lined with thousands of lights, holiday inflatables, and festive scenes through the woods. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there for photos and holiday wishes, and you can warm up with hot dogs, cocoa, and cookies by the fire. Admission is free, but donations help support the fire department.

- Indiana Railroad’s Santa Train in Morgantown and Helmsburg – One of the more unique holiday experiences in the area, the Santa Train makes its stops on December 5 in Morgantown at 4:30pm and Helmsburg at 7:15pm. This is your chance to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus aboard a vintage passenger car! Kids can mail letters to Santa, enjoy some treats, and mingle with beloved Christmas characters.

Other Things to Do in Nashville & Brown County, IN in December
While this post focuses on many of the holiday activities happening in Nashville and around Brown County during December, there’s plenty more to explore! And if you’re looking for even more ideas, many of the suggestions from my “Things to Do in November” post still apply as we move into winter.
Get Outside – Even in the Cold!
Just because it’s December doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. In fact, winter is one of my favorite times to hike around here—the bare trees open up views you can’t get any other time of year.
Hiking
Bundle up and hit the trails—one of my personal favorites for winter is Trail 10 at Brown County State Park. It’s an easy-to-access hike with gorgeous winter views of the forest. Trevlac Bluffs Nature Preserve is another fantastic spot where the bare trees reveal stunning overlooks you won’t want to miss. If you’re up for a winter adventure, Browning Mountain (aka “Indiana’s Stonehenge”) is a more remote but equally rewarding hike.
All of these trails have views that are best appreciated with the leaves off the trees, so definitely check them out this winter!

Biking
Yes, even in December! If the trails are dry, mountain biking in Brown County State Park is still fair game—just dress for the weather and check conditions. Road cyclists and gravel riders will love the open views and low-traffic routes this time of year.
Warm Up with Hot Drinks & Cozy Spots
After a day of exploring outside, warm up with a festive drink from one of Nashville’s local coffee shops or wineries! Whether you’re craving hot chocolate, a seasonal latte, or a glass of red wine, there’s something cozy waiting for you in Brown County.
And don’t forget to stop by one of my favorite local restaurants and bakeries for sweet treats, hearty meals, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, or curl up by the fireplace in a cozy spot like Naughty Dog Books.

And More…
Brown County is truly magical in December, with its mix of outdoor adventures and cozy spots to relax. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or just enjoying the holiday lights, there’s something special about this time of year. Happy exploring!
