One of our guests at the Brown County Barn Burner once told me they “wished someone had mentioned that many shops, restaurants, and in-town activities close on certain days so they could have picked better dates…” After chatting with them and recommending a few alternative spots, they ended up having a great time. But their comment stuck with me.
Brown County, Indiana is unique. Many visitors describe it as a charming step back in time, which is part of what makes this area so special. But, for those who aren’t prepared, there are a few things that can catch you off guard. So I’ve put together a list of 5 important tips that will help you plan a smoother visit to Nashville, Indiana, and Brown County.

1) Brown County is made up almost entirely of small, independent businesses
Small, independent, family businesses run most, if not all, of the shops, restaurants, and activities you’ll enjoy while you’re in Brown County. This means that most places are run by their owners or only have a small staff—so expect a personal touch at every stop!
But, with small businesses comes flexibility, and that can mean:
- Unique hours: Many shops don’t open until 10 or 11 a.m. and close around 5 or 6 p.m. Some coffee shops don’t even open until 9 a.m., so if you’re an early riser, plan accordingly!
- Limited days of operation: Some spots are only open from Thursday through Sunday. Always check ahead, especially if there’s a specific place you’re excited to visit.
- Surprise closures: Occasionally, a shop or restaurant might close unexpectedly due to power outages or staff shortages. Be sure to call ahead or check their Facebook pages for the most current info.
This might seem limiting, but it’s honestly part of what makes Brown County so charming—you get a chance to support local entrepreneurs and experience something truly unique.

2) Transportation is Limited, So Plan Ahead
In Brown County, you’ll find very little in terms of public transportation or rideshare options like Uber or Lyft. That means you’ll need a plan for getting around. Your main options locally are:
- Car or Motorcycle: Having your own vehicle or rental is essential if you plan to explore beyond Nashville.
- Biking/Walking: If you’re staying close to Nashville, walking or biking can be a great way to get around. However, sidewalks are limited outside of downtown, and the roads in the county can be very hilly and winding, with little to no shoulder space.
- E-bikes: If you’re comfortable with the hills, consider using an e-bike to explore the area—but stay alert and cautious on the roads. Brown County Bikes rents e-bikes, if you don’t have one of your own to bring.
3) Cell Service can be Spotty
Even in this day and age, there are still areas of Brown County with limited or no cell service, particularly for certain carriers like AT&T. If you plan on driving through more rural areas or exploring hiking trails, be sure to download maps and take screenshots of any important info beforehand.
And even in Nashville, service can slow down significantly during busy weekends—especially in the fall when the leaf-peeping crowds arrive. If you find yourself without service, you can always pop into one of the free Wi-Fi spots in town, like the Brown County Public Library or Sweetea’s Tea Shop, to name a few.
4) Expect to Encounter Nature, In All Its Forms
One of the charms of Brown County is the natural beauty all around you. But with that beauty comes bugs, birds, deer, and the occasional snake. Don’t worry—it’s all part of the experience!
Whether you’re hiking a trail or simply staying in a cabin, you’re bound to encounter a little wildlife. Be prepared with bug spray, and don’t be surprised if you see deer grazing or hear birds chirping outside your window. If you embrace it, it’ll only add to the magic of your stay.
5) Brown County may Move at a Different Pace than You’re Used to
While Nashville, Indiana is full of fun things to do, don’t expect big-city speed here. Things move at a slower, more relaxed pace—and that’s a good thing!
Shops might take their time opening, meals may take longer to prepare at a locally owned restaurant, and traffic can get a bit slower on scenic backroads. Take this as an opportunity to unwind, embrace the slower pace, and enjoy the charm of Brown County life.
