Where to Eat and Drink in Brown County & Nashville, Indiana

Are you planning a trip to the Brown County or Nashville, Indiana area?  Well, chances are you’ll need to eat while you’re here, so why not make it something delicious?  Keep reading and I’ll share all the details you’ll need to pick a great restaurant in this in-depth guide of my favorite local restaurants.

Good Food, Good Drinks, Good Times

Enjoying good food and drink is one of my favorite parts of vacation (and of life as a whole, let’s be honest), and luckily Brown County has lots of delicious options to choose from.  Our guests at the Brown County Barn Burner often ask for recommendations, so I decided to compile everything here for easier reference.

NOTE: This list is meant to serve as a general overview of a lot of different restaurants in Nashville and throughout Brown County.  So while I might generally mention “serves breakfast” or “try their cocktails” below, I share more specific suggestions of which restaurants are the best for certain meals or dishes on the blog.

Things to Know Before You Take My Recommendations

Obviously I can only speak from my own experience, so I fully acknowledge that these reviews are biased by my own taste preferences, family composition, and our geographic location  within Brown County.

So here are a few things to know about me to help put into context who I am and the foods I tend to like - hopefully this will help you know whether my experiences and recommendations are likely to line up with yours:

  • We don’t eat out that often (maybe once a week) and, when we do go out to eat, we usually try to avoid the weekends because that’s when everything is the busiest around here.  But some restaurants have limited or no weekday hours, so that means we rarely (and maybe never) eat at those restaurants.  This doesn’t mean they aren’t a great option, just that they don’t work well for my family, for whatever reason.  I’ll make note of any instances like this below though.

  • We have two young(er) kids.  For most of the time that we’ve lived here, they have not been old enough to be left at home alone, and we save hiring a babysitter for special occasions.  So usually, if we’re going out, it’s with two kids in tow.  I don’t know about you, but often going out to a restaurant with kids isn’t what I’d call “super fun” so that definitely influences where we choose to eat routinely.

  • We definitely have favorites that we go back to again and again.  This is partly because of their food and service, but also because they’re open hours that work for our family and are conveniently located near where we live.

  • While I love a good burger, pizza, or sandwich as much as anyone, there’s only so much of that I can eat!  But because the restaurants in Brown County cater to a lot of people on vacation, I would say there’s an over-abundance of places that primarily serve burgers, pizza, or sandwiches.  Although this has been getting better in recent years, we definitely tend to frequent places with a more unique and varied menu.

  • Full disclosure, though - my two favorite meal categories are appetizers (or what I call “snack dinner”) or a great salad paired with something fried.

Restaurants to Visit in Nashville & Brown County, Indiana

OK!  OK!  Now that I’ve gotten all that out of the way - on to the restaurants!

Like I mentioned above, we’ve lived here since 2016, but there are still some restaurants I haven’t tried, or that I’ve only tried once or twice.  This is usually because their hours or location don’t work well for when we go out to eat, NOT because they aren’t delicious, but I’ll be sure to note all that below.

Big Woods Pizza

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * OUTDOOR SEATING * LIVE MUSIC *

Based on my actions one year in college, I know for a fact that I can eat pizza almost every day for months on end and not get sick of it.  So please know that I’m already starting out biased towards any pizzeria…but we eat a lot of Big Woods Pizza.  This is partly because my husband works for the parent company (the Big Woods/Quaff On!/Hard Truth group), so we get an employee discount, but also because their pizza is good and we also really like their wings and the pulled pork nachos.

My go-to order:  This varies, because when we eat here it’s often as a family and we’re sharing various things. But, we usually go with a half Primal, half Forager pizza and will sometimes add wings or the pulled pork nachos (if kids are eating, we ask them to hold the onions and jalapenos on the nachos).  For beer, I love their Hoosier Red Ale or the Blood Orange Yellow Dwarf.

Bird’s Nest Café

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * OUTDOOR SEATING * VEGAN OPTIONS *

This is probably my second-most frequented restaurant in town (second only to the Brown County Inn).  What can I say?  I’m an absolute sucker for overflowing gardens, over-the-topl décor, and a totally unique menu that includes some fantastically delicious cocktails AND french fries.  They are typically just a brunch/lunch restaurant, but they occasionally stay open later on Saturday’s and offer a special dinner menu, so definitely check their Facebook page for those details.

Two quick things to note – their service is sometimes on the slow side and their menu is one of the most eclectic in town, so I don’t normally recommend this spot to people with young children or really picky eaters.  Their tables and set-up are also smaller than some other restaurants, so it’s not always the best option for large groups.

I don’t want these things to scare anyone away that wants to give them a try (as I said, this is one of my favorites!) but I do want people to know what they’re getting when they go in.  If you’ve got the time to relax, enjoy the atmosphere, and experience some amazing dishes then I highly recommend the Bird’s Nest Café.

My go-to order: Their menu changes seasonally, but usually for breakfast I choose a waffle option, or something with runny eggs piled on top.  For lunch, their turkey avocado sandwich with rosemary fries is always a favorite of mine.

Brown County Inn

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * OUTDOOR SEATING * LIVE MUSIC * VEGAN OPTIONS *

Hands down, this is our favorite restaurant in town and it’s always the one I recommend first to our guests at the Barn Burner.  This is one of the few restaurants in town that serves three meals a day, seven days a week and it checks all the boxes for our family that I mentioned at the top of this page:

  • Good hours, in Nashville (so convenient for us), plenty of parking

  • Varied and delicious menu with something for everyone, whether they want to stick with a classic or try something new.

  • Routinely excellent service

  • Super accommodating for large groups and kids

  • With kids – if the weather is nice, they have a small mini-golf course and playground off their back deck that restaurant guests are welcome to use

  • I also give them bonus points for their beautiful gardens and landscaping and the fact that they usually have some sort of live music Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

Need I say more?  Definitely check out the restaurant at the Brown County Inn if you get a chance.  And if you already have an opinion for eating there many years ago, give them another try – it changed ownership in 2015 or so and the new owners have made A LOT of upgrades and changes since then.

My go-to order: Either one of their specials - so many good ones to choose from! - or the steak and fries (add some chipotle aioli for the fries) and a side salad with ranch.

Brozinni Pizzeria

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * OUTDOOR SEATING *

As we’ve already established, I will pretty much never get sick of eating pizza.  So, I may be biased by that fact, but we love Brozzini’s!  Their pizzas and slices are HUGE though, so I especially love that they offer pizza by the slice daily (until 4pm, I think).  They also serve several different pasta choices, and my daughters love their spaghetti and meatballs.  Add a salad and some garlic knuckles and you’ll be good to go.

My go-to order: A salad with ranch, plus garlic knuckles or a meatball breadstick.  Usually I’m eating here with my kids, so I also end up with some of their leftover spaghetti.

Casa del Sol

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * OUTDOOR SEATING *

I am admittedly not a big fan of your standard small-town-American Mexican restaurant, my husband and daughters would happily eat here every day, so they must be doing something right.  Even though it’s not the type of food I routinely crave, Casa del Sol is consistent and the food is served quickly.  Casa del Sol is definitely worth keeping in mind if this kind of restaurant is typically your jam, or if you just need somewhere quick and predictable.

My go-to order: When I do eat here, we always get chips and queso to share, plus I get the mixed fajitas.  My husband recommends the fajita quesadilla and the carnitas.

The Chocolate Moose

*BREAKFAST * LUNCH * DINNER * SWEETS & TREATS * FAMILY FRIENDLY * OUTDOOR SEATING * VEGAN OPTIONS *

As a tourist town, Nashville has more than the usual amount of ice cream shops (there were at least four at my last count), but the Chocolate Moose is the one my family chooses most frequently.  This is partly because they typically have the latest hours, but we also just love their ice cream, and the fact that they offer other ‘real’ food options and coffee.

Our go-to orders: For breakfast, I love their Spicy Chai Latte (sometimes with an added shot or two of espresso) and the english muffin, sausage, gouda breakfast sandwich.  If it’s ice cream time, then I always get a Blizz made with homemade vanilla ice cream, plus cookie dough and pecan mix-ins.

My kids love their Lemon Custard, Strawberry, and Grasshopper ice cream flavors, and they always ask for candy eyes to be added to their cones.

My husband swears by their chocolate shake and says it’s the best he’s ever had (and trust me, he’s had a lot of chocolate shakes in his life).  According to him, everyone should try a Moose Chocolate shake, made with white milk.

The Daily Grind

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * FAMILY FRIENDLY *

The Daily Grind is less than a one minute walk from the Brown County Barn Burner, so this is often my go-to for a late morning or midday pick-me-up if I’m working at the Barn Burner.  The inside of their shop is cozy and adorable, and they’re located on a peaceful square with lots of shaded benches if you prefer to sip outside.

My go-to order: I usually keep it simple with an iced chai latte, but they have plenty of other delicious options and I should probably try branching out occasionally…

Fearrin’s Ice Cream & Yogurt Depot

* SWEETS & TREATS * FAMILY FRIENDLY * OUTDOOR SEATING * VEGAN OPTIONS *

Fearrin’s Ice Cream & Yogurt Depot is a classic small-town ice cream shop with all the flavors and sweet treats you’d expect. This is also the location where you can start your ride on the Nashville Express Trolley (such a fun activity option for a day with kids). I will also choose Fearrin’s if I want to check out the Lawrence Family Glass Blowers shop next door, but want to leave kids outside on a bench with ice cream to keep them busy, so I can shop in peace.

My go-to order: They have a lot of delicious ice cream sundae combinations, so I usually go for one of those, or one of their homemade ice cream ‘drumsticks.’

Ferguson House Bistro & Beer Garden

* LUNCH * DINNER * OUTDOOR SEATING * LIVE MUSIC *

The Ferguson House Bistro and Beer Garden are somewhat newer additions to town, but they are already knocking it out of the park with their offerings.  This restaurant is located in a remodeled old house (the Ferguson House, to be exact) and the old house charm, original wavy glass in some of the windows, and checking out all the art by Patricia Rhoden Bartels are all things I enjoy almost as much as the food!  They also have a great patio and beer garden space to enjoy outside, and both are dog-friendly.

My go-to order: Their chef is always mixing things up, and putting out new specials, so I just let myself look forward to a surprise any time I go to the Ferguson House.  I’ve gone enough times at this point to know it will be delicious, so I don’t worry about anything else.

Hard Truth Hills

* LUNCH * DINNER * OUTDOOR SEATING * LIVE MUSIC *

Hard Truth Hills campus is the 325-acre flagship destination of the Big Woods Restaurant Group, Quaff On! Brewing Company, and Hard Truth Distilling Co family of companies - all of which were started right here in Nashville!  What they’ve built there is truly impressive and includes a large restaurant, a terrace area with a walk-up food window and frequent live music, extensive grounds you can explore, and several tour/tasting/adventure experience options to choose from.  It’s a whole ‘vibe’ and experience that you should check out if you have the time and interest while you’re in Brown County.

However, in full disclosure: 1) as I’ve already mentioned, my husband works for the Big Woods/Quaff On!/Hard Truth company and 2) service at the restaurant can be super sloooow and they often have a long wait on weekends.  But it’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience, they have fun drinks, and the terrace is a great spot to hang out and listen to live music, so definitely keep it in mind as an option!

NOTE: Even though Hard Truth Hills is very close to town, I don’t consider it to be “walkable” because the sidewalk doesn’t go all the way there and the entrance drive has a really steep hill you’d have to climb, so you should have a plan for driving there and getting home afterwards.

My go-to order: Usually the Candied Bacon Whiskey Burger or the “Little Nashville” Chicken Sandwich.  As I mentioned before for Big Woods Pizza, for beer I love their Hoosier Red Ale or the Blood Orange Yellow Dwarf.  I don’t normally order cocktails at restaurants, but they have some really good ones, if that’s something you like trying.

Heavenly Biscuit

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * OUTDOOR SEATING *

I have a confession to make…as of August, 2023 I’ve only eaten here once.  Now, that one time was DELICIOUS, and it’s on my list to go more often, but it just hasn’t worked out for me to go more frequently before now.  It’s mainly because I don’t go out for breakfast very often, there’s always a crowd at this place, and I haven’t made it a priority to either 1) get there early enough to beat the crowd or 2) go prepared to wait.

But for everyone else, that crowd should probably be a good sign of how great their food is!  Two important notes - they open at 8am, which is earlier than most other restaurants in town, and they are cash only, but do have an ATM inside if you forget to bring cash with you.

My go-to order: I’ve only ever had their sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich, but it was AMAZING.  Frankly, it blew my usual breakfast sandwich from the Nashville BP out of the water (as it should).  The Nashville BP still has my sausage, egg, and cheese loving heart for any day I need something grab-and-go and cheaper, but the Heavenly Biscuit is the hands down winner for all around flavor and quality.  I can’t wait to find time to try some more things on their menu!

Hobnob Corner Restaurant

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRINEDLY *

The Hobnob Corner Restaurant has been a staple of downtown Nashville for many years. It’s located in the oldest commercial building in town and you’ll definitely feel that history as soon as you walk through the door. They typically serve lunch and dinner, but also serve breakfast on the weekends.  Their menu is full of tasty classics, plus some more varied options, and I’m personally a fan of their big dessert case full of freshly baked cookies.

My go-to order: We’ve eaten here a few times, but not enough to have a “go-to” order yet.  I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve eaten here though.

Johnny’s Grub to Go

* LUNCH * DINNER *

Johnny’s Grub to Go is one of those hidden gems that you might never stop at if you didn’t know to seek it out.  The menu is varied, and includes both American classics and Filipino specialties.  In my opinion, the Asian and Filipino options are what makes this restaurant stand out in Brown County, but I’ve heard good things about all their food, so order whatever sounds good to you.  They’re only open on weekends, so make sure to take that into account when you’re planning your trip.

My go-to order: I haven’t eaten here enough to have one, but I hear good things about everything on their menu.  It’s high on my list to start eating here more often, and I’ll report back as soon as I do.

Miller’s Ice Cream House

* SWEETS & TREATS * FAMILY FRIENDLY *

Miller’s Ice Cream boasts that their ice cream is ‘all homemade, all the time’ and it shows in their wonderful quality (and the face that you can see them making ice cream almost any time you visit). They’ve also got some of the most uniquely delicious flavors in town - including Persimmon, Apple Butter, and Black Walnut - and my kids are obsessed with the player piano in the entrance area. However, of all the ice cream shops in town, Miller’s Ice Cream probably has the most limited/erratic hours, so we definitely eat here the least.

My go-to order: I’m a sucker for their Black Walnut (definitely a distinctive flavor that’s not for everyone) or their Brown County Campfire (if I want something a little more ‘classic’).

Nashville BP

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY *

Yes, I’m talking about the gas station, but hear me out!  They actually serve some (surprisingly?) good, made-to-order food that is also affordable.  They also open earlier and serve you quicker than many of the dine-in restaurants in town, so it’s a great option if you need to grab something quickly to start your day.  My personal favorite is their sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich but their menu includes lots of other options as well, plus daily lunch specials.

My go-to order: If I’m eating here, it’s usually for breakfast, but they also have lunch and dinner options.  My breakfast go-to is a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, plus a donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles OR an apple fritter, if they have them.

The Nashville Chop House

* LUNCH * DINNER * SPECIAL OCCASIONS *

The Nashville Chop House is one of the newer restaurant additions in town and is located in the Hotel Nashville Complex.  We haven’t had a chance to go yet, but have heard lots of great things about it.  It’s the only steakhouse in town and its prices definitely put it in the “special occasion meal” category.  But I’m excited to try them out when we get a chance, and I’m happy to have a ‘fancy dinner’ option that’s more near by than the Story Inn.

Nashville Fudge Kitchen

* SWEETS & TREATS * FAMILY FRIENDLY *

My mouth waters every time I walk by this building because everything they make smells SO GOOD.  And it only gets better (or worse for your daily sugar levels?) when you go inside to check out the varieties of fudge, caramel corn, and other candies that you can watch them make in-house.  They are also the only ice cream place that I’m aware of in town that sells gelato.

My go-to order: For candy, I love the sea salt caramels or a mix of the milk and dark chocolate turtles.  For ice cream or gelato, it varies by the day and my mood.

The Nashville House Restaurant

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * OUTDOOR SEATING *

The Nashville House has long been a fixture in town and they’ve done a good job of keeping the classics that so many people love (the fried chicken, fried biscuits and apple butter, decor, etc) while also managing to update the menu and layout in a way that makes more sense for today.  My mom actually has stories from when she was a kid and her family would sometimes make a special trip to Nashville (from their home in Liberty, IN - about 2 hrs drive away) after church on Sundays, just to eat at the Nashville House.

The restaurant ownership changed hands a few years ago and, at that time, they added an awesome outdoor patio, they sometimes have live music, and they also offer off-site catering.  We often eat here and I’m always recommending it to the groups (especially the larger ones) staying at the Brown County Barn Burner.

My go-to order: I often crave (and subsequently eat) an order of their Crispy Green Beans and the Buffalo and Bleu Salad with breaded chicken and ranch dressing.  The fried biscuits and apple butter come free with every meal and are a no-brainer.

Nashville Indiana Farmers Market

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * SWEETS & TREATS * VEGAN OPTIONS * FAMILY FRIENDLY * LIVE MUSIC *

If you’ll be visiting Nashville on any Sunday from May through October, definitely plan to check out the Nashville Indiana Farmers Market!  It’s located in the Brown County Inn Parking lot and runs from 11-2 on market days, rain or shine.  At the Farmers Market, local producers, farmers, bakers, and makers sell an array of foods like fresh produce, jams, baked goods, candy confections, roasted coffee, and more.  Shop at the Farmers Market to support local and check out the next up and coming food stars in Brown County, Indiana while you can.

My go-to order: This changes every week based on what’s in season and what’s on the menu at home, but we always leave with some fresh produce, a baked good (or three), and occasionally some frozen meat or locally-produced cheese.

Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls & Café

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * OUTDOOR SEATING *

This restaurant has an extremely devoted following and often sells out of their cinnamon rolls on the weekends.  It recently changed ownership, but the new owners are using the same recipes and keeping much of the same schedule and structure as the previous owners.  Their main hours are Thursday through Sunday, with an occasional Wednesday thrown in there, and they only serve breakfast and lunch.

I am not someone who loves overly sweet things, so that’s my only issue with this restaurant - the cinnamon rolls are just way too sweet for me (like a ‘hurts my teeth’ level of sweet).  However, as the name suggests, they have more to offer than just cinnamon rolls and, from what I hear, this is definitely a restaurant worth checking out.

My go-to order: I haven’t eaten here often enough to have one, but if you like sweet I’d say try a cinnamon roll!  They’re huge, so definitely plan to share.

Out of the Ordinary Restaurant & Hickory Sports Bar

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * OUTDOOR SEATING *

Whenever I’m craving ‘classic’ Indiana or bar food (aka fried), I almost always choose the Out of the Ordinary Restaurant.  They also have some of the best service I’ve encountered anywhere – not just in Nashville – and we always find ourselves saying “WOW, this server is FANTASTIC” any time we eat here.

My go-to order: I almost always order their crispy chicken salad with ranch dressing (if you’re really living large, be sure to add hard boiled egg and bacon), but I also think they have the best fried pork tenderloin sandwich in town and my kids love their fettuccine alfredo with chicken.

Rafters Food & Spirits

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY * OUTDOOR SEATING * LIVE MUSIC *

Located at the Season’s Lodge, the space for Rafters Food & Spirits was majorly remodeled a few years ago and has consistently been knocking it out of the park since then.  Their menu is delicious, their service is good, and their space is beautiful.  Unfortunately the location can be a little “out of sight, out of mind,” but I’d definitely recommend checking Rafters out!

My go-to order: Their Pulled Pork Loaded Tots appetizer is delicious and could be a meal in and of itself.  I also love their Portobello Fries appetizer, the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, and their Fried Chicken entree.

Story Inn

* LUNCH * DINNER * LIVE MUSIC * SPECIAL OCCASIONS *

If you love old things, and are up for a bit of a drive, the Story Inn is a great option when you’re in Brown County. Although, their motto is “One inconvenient location since 1851,” if that tells you anything… The town of Story and the Story Inn are pretty much one in the same, and are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so it’s a really fun, immersive experience if you choose to make the drive.

The Story Inn Restaurant highlights seasonal and locally-produced ingredients via a prix fixe menu for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, or brunch on Sundays, and reservations are required.  A more limited menu is also available at the Story Inn Tavern, where they also occasionally host live music, monthly comedy shows, karaoke, and game nights.

My go-to order: Since their restaurant menu is prix fixe and changes seasonally, you don’t really have a lot of choice or advance notice on what’s going to be offered.  We usually save this for special occasions and I’ve always enjoyed eating here, so I just trust that whatever I end up with is going to be delicious.

| Website | Facebook | Map |

Sugar Creek BBQ

* LUNCH * DINNER * FAMILY FRIENDLY *

We love Sugar Creek BBQ – their meats and sides (especially their slaw and cornbread) are delicious.  I also love that they take advance orders for catering, and we’ve used them for several family events. HOWEVER, if you are interested in getting a large carry-out order for a group, you really need to contact them and place that order in advance.  We’ve actually been told “no” if we go in and try to place a large-ish (let’s say for 6-10 people), spur-of-the-moment carry-out order.  That’s obviously their prerogative as a business, but it means we eat here less than we would if I could indulge my usual last-minute, large group picnic BBQ cravings.

My go-to order: Ribs, smoked turkey, or brisket with cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread as sides.

| Website | Facebook | Map |

Sweetea’s Tea Shop

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * FAMILY FRIENDLY * OUTDOOR SEATING *

In addition to serving a broad menu of tea, coffee, and bubble drinks, Sweetea’s Tea Shop also sells their custom tea blends and other tea making products in their shop.  They also have free wi-fi and this is a great spot to grab a drink and a seat and rest for a bit, before you get back to shopping and exploring everything Nashville has to offer.

My go-to order: I’m often swayed by whatever flavor they have on special on a given day, but one of my all-time favorites is a Blueberry Rooibos Iced Tea (slightly sweetened).

| Website | Facebook | Map |

Sycamore Saloon

* LUNCH * DINNER * GOOD FOR LARGE GROUPS * LIVE MUSIC *

The Sycamore Saloon (previously the Rawhide Ranch) is one of the newest restaurants in Brown County and the new owners have a lot of exciting things in the works.  In addition to a great menu and solid servers, they often have live music, trivia night, and they put on several special events and festivals throughout the year.  Definitely keep an eye on social media to stay up to date on everything they’re doing and plan to check them out the next time you’re in Brown County!

My go-to order: We love their Tater Kegs (like giant stuffed tater tots) as an appetizer and I’ve ordered and enjoyed their Pork Chop with Apple Chutney, Mashed Potatoes, and Green Beans more than once.

| Website | Facebook | Map |

The Tasty Plate Food Truck

* BREAKFAST * LUNCH * DINNER * VEGAN OPTIONS *

The Tasty Plate specializes in an all plant-based (aka vegan) menu, and is the only restaurant that I’m aware of in Brown County that doesn’t serve any food containing animal products.  But even if you’re fully on Team Omnivore (like me), you should keep an open mind and give them a try because their food is delicious!  The Tasty Plate Food Truck doesn’t have a permanent location at this time, but they’re at the Nashville Indiana Farmers Market most Sundays from May through October, 11am-2pm.

My go-to order: The chef and owner changes up the menu pretty routinely, so you’ll just have to pick based on what’s on the menu on a given day!  Any food I’ve ever eaten that was made by Chef Dustie was absolutely delicious though.
